Losing Group Health Ins | Arthritis Information

Share

Does anyone know of an organization that can be joined that offers group health insurance? I can't pass the medical for ind health policy underwriting. My COBRA is running out and a HIPPA policy is 2,700 a month for husband and me.

Any help appreciated! BrainStorm Needed.

Addl info I live in AZ there is no state high risk pool.
Aren't the new healthcare laws supposed to prevent the insurance companies from withholding due to preexisting conditions?  When does that go into effect?

Also, depending on what state you live in - you may qualify for a Plan B high risk health insurance pool.
RNmomInLa2010-05-15 17:57:46The new health reform will help me in 2014. It would help me now but I would have to go without ins for 6 months.
I know many other people have faced this problem and found a workable solution. The simplest is to find a job with group health but it is not going well.

Please keep thinking. Thank you!
Marian,

Maybe contact your Senator? They are there to help, right? Just a thought. Hope you find something soon. Try not to stress, it's not good for your health. keep us updated.

Pre-existing hold outs are for those who have NOT been insured for a certain period of time.. if  you have continued insurance.. you can not be turned down for a preexisting condition..
I've posted the link here before... I'll see if I can locate it again.
Babs,
HIPAA law will give me an individual policy for 2,700 a month I just can't afford it for very long.

LEV,

Both my senators are republicans  McCain is especially dead set against health care reform. I doubt it would be of any use to beg.
[QUOTE=marian]Babs, HIPAA doesn't provide health insurance, what she's talking about is that HIPAA regulations will prevent an insurer from excluding her pre-existing condition...that quote she's getting is what an insurer wants to cover her with the RA. HIPAA doesn't control premiums.

I know a few people here, pre Mass health reform, who got group insurance through this organization:

http://www.nasro-co-op.com/

It doesn't look like they cover AZ, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

What does her husband do for a living? Is he self-employed? He should try professional/trade associations in his field and the local Chamber of Commerce to see if they know of any group insurance pools he could join.

Does RA have a national association? Some of our kidney failure patients get assistance paying premiums from the National Kidney Foundation and I know that the National Cancer Society helps with premiums for certain types of cancer.

I'm assuming that they earn too much for Medicaid and that she's too young for Medicare.

Move out of AZ to a place that has a high risk pool? Pretty drastic, I know, but some folks have moved to MA to get health insurance, though the higher cost of living here would eat up some of the savings on premiums.

I found this by Googling...I don't know how old it is and if they still offer this but she could call Assurant and ask:

Also, it might make sense to price their plans separately if her husband is healthy. It usually makes financial sense to get family coverage, but is she can find a specialty insurance product for RA patients (like the one above), it might make sense for him to get separate, more basic, individual insurance.

i hope this is helpful... and if I hear more I'll post..

Good luck
Marian,

I too am against the health care reform as it's written but that doesn't mean that I am against healthcare reform or against you finding a resolve to your healthcare problem. I think that you have been listening to the wrong people if they are telling you that republicans are against healthcare reform. I do not believe that your Senators do not care about your healthcare concerns. Until you contact them with your healthcare problems and they blow you off, I don't think it's fair of you to say derogatory things about your Senators without you at least contacting them and asking them for help. If they blow you off or are unconcerned about your healthcare problems, then let me know about your Senators. Again, I only wish good results, whether thru the government or from members here or anywhere.

OK LEV I heard you. But I wrote to him about training rhuemys for children because there is a total lack of them in AZ, and what a huge difference early care makes, I just got a form letter reply from his office. It was not even about healthcare.Babs Thank you for all your research. I am checking out Assurant, it might work out for me!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I really do appreciate your support. Good luck!!  *crossed fingers*Marian, I hope you have some luck with this and please, let us know how it goes.

Babs, that's some good information and a great contact!

WaddieMarian, I don't have anything to add but wanted you to know - don't give up searching for a solution, don't be discouraged something might pop up for you.

Babs, that was good info.  There are so many different plans, rules and regs that aren't the same from state to state that's it's really hard to research.  You did good for Marian.

Lindy
marian,

I too wish you the best in resolving your healthcatre problem. I once again wish that you would contact your senators. Keep in mind that this is a election year in tight races. I realize that we are commoners or peons if you will, and I know that we don't have the clout of an Oprah or a Angelina Joli or Brad Pit or Sting or Justin Bieber or any of the beautiful people but none the less, this may be just the time where you may get some response. Go ahead and plead and beg. So what? Shed some tears. Who cares? Get it done. Get some action. A defeatist attitude will certainly get you nowhere. Remember, if you keep knocking, someone will finally answer. Many times, the pain in the ass, actually gets what the pain in the ass is asking for, just to get rid of the pain in the ass. You can be their pain in the ass. But up to you. I can only give you good advise. But once again, a defeatist attitude gets you nowhere.

We need Medicare supplement insurance because we cannot predict what  our medical bills will be. In some years,  our costs may be low. In other years, we may have very high medical expenses. If we have Medicare supplement insurance, we will have peace of mind in knowing that we are protected from most of these costs. Carl2010-05-27 02:38:19
