can u get arthritis in your tailbone??

im just really confused cuz i had noooo injuries...
Hi.

I'm 58 and decided to try and ride a bike after 30 plus years of being out of the saddle.
I was only on the bike for ten minutes but have spent the last month (Easter) or so in much pain in that area.

Ended up going to the Doc after putting up with the pain for two weeks and he said that Ra does not affect that part of the body.

From this little ducks perspective I am not so sure of what the Doc has told me.
My hips have been aching as well so I am leaning toward the idea that perhaps the RA does have something to do with it.

I've read many reports of people with RA experiencing this symptom with a 50/50 split as to whether RA can affect the tail bone.
There seems to be two camps, the NO camp and the maybe camp.

I'm not much help to you but thought I would offer my thoughts as this is a current condition that I suffer from.
Bodak, I also have hip pain, but only on my right side and it seems to affect/effect my right leg as well and I know dam well that it is RA.  I am hoping it is only paying a short visit.  LOL
Time will tell.  I used my cane for the first time today and it really does help.
I hope that yours is only for a short visit too Stephen.
Well sometimes bending wrong and you can injure yourself and not know it. I get tailbone pain on occasion. It is intence. Ouch! I get inflamation in my lower back and it goes all of the way down to my tailbone.

I would tell your doctor do you have something for inflamation? Also you could get some relief from physical therapy that would be best or the chiropractor even for tailbone pain. So call the RD tomorrow or at least your GP.

I have RA and Sjorgren's and fibro and I over do things constantly so I pretty much can get throbbing debilatating pain every where in my body from time to time. The tailbone is a source of pain that is in my opinion one of the worst. hard to rest that area of your body.

Try a nice hotbath with epson salts tonight and call the doctor tomorrow. See if they can send you to physical therapy to get some ultra sound treatments.
Down by your tailbone are your sacroiliac joints...that is what hurts for me (and has for several years).  Although I've been told RA doesn't affect them, they are joints, so who knows?  My chiropractor helps a little, but unfortunately I don't have any other suggestions. So sorry that you are having tailbone pain.  It stinks!  I suffered for 15 months with it.  My Rheumy told me that RA does not affect that area, too.  I have had pretty bad bilateral sacroilitis in the past, as well.  For me, the painful areas for each are separate and distinct.  I found the only real (and lasting) relief for both of these problems, knock on wood, to be nerve block injections.  They are no picnic, as far as shots go, but WOW - when the pain is gone, life is soooo much better!  My only regret is in waiting so long to go for the shot.  The tailbone nerve block shot is called an empar block.  Talk to your doctor about it, if nothing else seems to help that tailbone pain.
Hope you are feeling better soon,
Mary-Pat
I get episodes off and on over the years. It is excruciatingly painful. Mine always went away on its own. I had broken my tailbone roller skating as a kid. I think something gets inflamed down there -- perhaps a nerve or something that causes the pain. My sympathies.
