VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY AND RHEUMATIC DISEASES | Arthritis Information

Two separate studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with a range of rheumatic diseases, with over half of all patients having below the normal healthy levels of vitamin D (48-145 nmol/L) in their bodies. A further study assessing response to vitamin D supplementation found that taking the recommended daily dose did not normalise vitamin D levels in rheumatic disease patients. The results of these three studies were presented today at EULAR 2010, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Rome, Italy.

thank you Lynn... that was only a blurb but it's thought provoking!  I wonder if all your D is via the sun... if that's a better option.. I believe so!
I know in my heart of hearts that there is a correlation..but what is it? is it the disease makes it hard to process and utilize?  is it the lack of the ability to process and utilize disease causing??
Thanks Lynn,
My vitamin D was a 9 on my last bloodwork.  Dr. is having me take supplements and will retest in early July.  Dr. called it osteomalacia (soft bones).  The July results will be interesting.
I consulted with a naturopathic physician who told me the theory in that line of medicine is that we suffer from "leaky gut syndrome."  This is generally a precursor to the various A/I diseases rearing their heads.  Poor absorption of nutrients is one of the symptoms.

You can google leaky gut syndrom and naturopathy for some interesting reading.  Whether one believes the theory or not - I have time and again proven that I do not fully absorb meds/supplements.

Bonny.. did your doctor schedule a bone density scan?

You COULD be heading toward osteomalacia with low Vit D because of calcium malabsorption..  but I wouldn't state that without a scan... ask him/her for one...

and take  your vitamins..
