EULAR: Levels of Homocysteine Higher in Gout | Arthritis Information

ROME -- Homocysteine levels -- often a marker of inflammation -- are elevated in patients with gout, and are correlated with serum uric acid levels in these patients as well, researchers found.

In 60 men with gout, homocysteine levels were 16.5 mmol/l compared with a level of 14.9 mmol/l among 39 men with other rheumatic disorders but not gout (P<0.05), according to Ole Slot, MD, of the Glostrup Hospital in Glostrup, Denmark.

In 13 women with gout, the same pattern held -- the level of plasma homocysteine was 24 mmol/l compared with 18 mmol/l among 26 women with other forms of rheumatic disease (P<0.01), Slot reported here at the European League Against Rheumatism meeting

Men and women were analyzed separately, he said, since the women with gout tended to be considerably older (about 80) than the men with gout (about 60).

"Future studies should investigate if urate lowering therapy reduces levels of plasma homocysteine in patients with gout," Slot said.

ROME -- Researchers here say that there is some science to back up decades-old anecdotal reports that eating cherries may help combat rheumatic and inflammatory diseases such as gout.

A small retrospective study found that almost all of the 24 patients who took a tablespoon of cherry juice concentrate twice a day for at least four months experienced a greater than 50% reduction in gout attacks, American researchers said here at the 2010 annual meeting of the European League Against Rheumatism.

More than a third of the patients taking the cherry juice concentrate -- who were not on urate-lowering medication at the time -- were free of gout attacks at four to six months, said Naomi Schlesinger, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ.

"We did not see any serum uric acid lowering effect of cherry juice concentrate so we believe that the mechanism of action in protecting people against gout attacks has to do with the ability of the juice to reduce inflammation," said Schlesinger.
