RA and Pregnant | Arthritis Information

Hi All,

Im new here. I have had RA for about 6 years. I have taken the whole Gammet of meds. I am actually curious if anyone on here has gotten pregnant while taking Methotrexate, Leflunomide or Enbrel? I have found out I am 8 weeks pregnant and my doctor says that there is more than likely somethingwrong with the baby because of my meds. He has suggested I terminate. This was discussed before I started these meds. Now that I have seen the ultrasound the mom in me is wanting to protect this little peanut more than the brain is saying what I should do intellectually. I am wondering if anyone here has gone thru this and what they decided to do and what the out come was. I am 31 and already a single mom of a 9 year old I have no idea about the ramfications of the meds..

I want to congratulate you and hope for the best..

I had my 3rd child 11 months ago but I was not on any of those meds.  I knew I wanted one more child so I refrained from taking anything too harsh.  Was it your RD that told you to terminate your pregnancy or an OB.  I would get an OB's opinion first.  I wanted to bump this for you in case some one missed it.  Congratulations and I hope only the best for you and your child.

ReegieHi Kota,

Aww, what a hard spot your're in.  I wish I had a definate answer for you!  I would definatley do what Reegie said and check with your OB first, get their opinion.  I was told by my Rheumy if I ever became pregnant on Methotrexate I'd have to terminate because it would cause birth defects..but If I were in your shoes, my protective instinct would probably kick in too. Do tons of research. Ask if there's any tests they can perform even thought I'm sure it's so tiny right now to see if it's growing the way it should be. I tried finding stuff on the internet to see if anyone had a baby while taking Mtx.  The only thing I found was an article from a clinical study I think(not sure though) stating they had 5 pregnancies out of hundreds , while on Methotrexate come out fine. Good luck on your decision. I know it's a tough one.
