Shortage of gold salts? | Arthritis Information

Hi all, my sister has been receiving gold salts injections for decades for her RA.  They have helped her a lot,  however there seems to be a shortage now.  I've been googling like crazy and can't even find out with pharmaceutical company manufacturers these.

Has anyone heard of this shortage or is experiencing the same problem?  Thanks!
Gold salts went out of favor with the advent of MTX, Arava, the biologics and other newer safer medications.  in fact I would think that new patients didn't even know gold salts were ever prescribed.  They were very very hard on the kidneys.  As they were only used to treat RA most companies stopped manufacturing when demand stopped however there still may be companies producing them under the orphan drug rules.

There may be a shortage of raw ingrediants right now...the cost of gold is out of this world currently which would push up the cost of all gold based products

You might check with your local arthritis foundation they may know of a manufacturer or with her doctor.  Also check with your pharmacist...part of their role is to help patients locate the drug prescribed
Thank you Buckeye.  It makes sense that the few remaining manufacturers might not be returning a profit, given the raw materials cost.  She did well on those injections, they just seemed to suit her.  Yes Snow, my sister found relief from the gold salts many years ago and has been quite afraid to try anything new.  The whole concept of the biologics, home injections and trying to find "the one that works" is frightening to her.
