Lessen Side Effect versus Lessen Infammation | Arthritis Information

Share

I heard  medicines have side effects ... so I try not to take too much.  Actually I cut the dosage.  I am supposed to take plaquenil and prednisone morning and night.  But I don't take it in the morning ... that's why I hurt ... because by nighttime, the medicine already wore off.

But I don't want to get side effects.  So far so good without side effects.... but I also think long term the medicine is not good for my stomach lining ... so that's why I cut the dosage and skip it in the morning ... I figured, I can just sleep at night and the inflammation won't bother me too much ... I usually don't hurt unless I move my body

What is more important ... lessen chance of side effect? ... or lessen inflammation at night when I am not active anyways so the inflammation doesn't hurt because I am immobile
Cindy,

You realize that nsaids are the hardest on your stomach lining, right? You also realize that inflamation pain equals joint and bone destruction, right? Most medicines are very well monitored and tolerated. The side effects written are from the least to the worst. Very few will ever get the worst. Like everyone, you just got the rheumatoid arthritis blues and the "worst that can happen" jitters. Good Doctors will keep you safe from harm. Most everyone here, past and present have had good results without harmful side effects. Good luck on your ra journey.

See that light up ahead? It's not a train, it's the end of the tunnel.

Hi ... thanks for the response.

I am still trying to learn ... does that mean for joint destruction, there has to be both inflammation and pain.

I have inflammation, but there is no pain unless I am trying to move.  Does that mean there is no joint destruction if I just rest still ... for example, when I am sleeping.
If you have been diagnosed as having RA then you have RA and should be taking your medications as prescribed.
The medications are to lesson or stop the damage that RA causes.
From what you say the disease is still active whether you feel pain or not.

I take a strong mix of meds and for the most part thought that any damage was under control.
MRI scans show that the disease is still active and doing it's thing, all be it at a much slower rate than if I was not taking any  medications.
Don't mess with this disease, it will bite you and bite hard.

Cindy,

I think that there only needs to be inflammation for destruction of the joint and/or the bone. So, just keeping yourself in a painfree position doesn't stop the destruction. I remember those days of pillows under my ankles and knees and between the knees. I got so accustomed to them that to this day my bed is loaded with pillows and enjoy them under my knees and between the knees.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Overview

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic (long-standing) joint disease that damages the joints of the body. The damage is caused by inflammation of the joint lining tissue. Inflammation is normally a response by the body's immune system to "assaults" such as infections, wounds, and foreign objects. In rheumatoid arthritis, the inflammation is misdirected to attack the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is often referred to as RA.

Rheumatoid arthritis should not be confused with other forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or arthritis associated with infections. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. This means that the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues it is supposed to protect.
