I've had a couple in the past, but recently I've had issues with  steroid shots that crystallized...So I won't do them anymore  YIKES!!! What the heck is THAT all about?  crystallized steroids?? Yes that is a new found problem I have never heard of. Does it make you sick or does it hurt?
YIKES!!! What the heck is THAT all about?  crystallized steroids??
With some people, me included, sometimes steroid shots can cause a pretty intense flare in the joint.

It is commonly called a "cortisone flare,"  it happens when the  injected cortisone crystallizes and causes a brief period of pain worse than before the shot. It usually lasts a couple of days and I found it to be very painful.   So I choose not to do them anymore.......
Oh I get that. I guess I thought that was just part of it. I did not know crystalized was the term for it. The first day is never pleasant and maybe the second day also.

I do not get long term results with the shots. It seems to be hit or miss. I have had them in my spine, shoulder and toes. If you have them in a joint the joint does flare up afterward before it starts to fell better. Then you feel oh so wonderful. Then crash and burn you are back to where you started from if it is a long term issue like RA.

Sometimes you get a couple of months of relief. Sometimes only a month. Then sometimes after the second shot maybe a little while longer, it could go either way.

You may get better results from ultra sound? Well both are temporary fixes.
For me, the pain from the shot crystallizing was much worse then the pain in the joint.  I was imobilized for two days.  I couldn't walk on my ankle and the pain was so bad, I cried.  (I never cry about pain, so this was pretty bad)
I discussed it with my RD and we both came to the conclusion that the treatment wasn't worth it, at least for me.  So I don't do the shots anymore.  Two reactions like that were more than enough.   I don't get a lot of relief from them anyway, so I don't really miss them...I was thinking of getting crutches to use for a time to keep weight off the hips..

I am just constantly turning things around in my head trying to figure out how to help myself
Have you talked to your RD about this? Orthos know alot but honestly the RD is the only doctor qualified to say if something is osteo or RA related. Even fibro is a diagnoses to land on an RD's desk.

Way back when I first started having the problems you are having I went to the ortho's. I was sent to PT and refered to an RD. Please let us know the out come as if you find comfort and I hope that you do we are interested in what works for you.

Most of the injections that I have had recently were in joints. Trigger point injections I can not give you much advise on. So if you do go this route and it helps you I am interested.

Also a walking stick does come in handy from time to time. I always keep one by my bed because I never know how I will be feelling when I wake up.

I see older people with the walkers. I just wonder where they get the upper body strength for that? My shoulders are bad so I worry sometimes about being able to support myself later in life with walker or a cain.
thanks Milly !!  I will definitely give you guys all the wisdom (or not) of my experience!

Trigger point is scheduled for 10/4 - I hope!!  and I sincerely wish for some relief!
p.s.  I have an RD appointment on Thursday and I plan to discuss this completely.  Thanks!
