Under 50 - Prednisone sideeffect | Arthritis Information

I developed PMR at 49.  Being uninsured & self-employed, my doctor visits are limited.  I was diagnosised by a General Practioner and saw a Rheumatic specialist twice for the diagnosis confirmation.  He was interested in my age - he brought in a couple young doctors to run through the symptoms.  The specialist put my on Prednisone - I have stablized at 15mg per day with minor shoulder pain, but the leg pain has disapeared.

I had gone into Menapause in my late 30s. (I am getting tired of the word "premature" this and that).   My only Menapausal problem was that I stopped sleeping.  I went on Estrogen therapy and the sleeping problem went away.  By my mid 40s, I stopped the therapy and everything seemed to be fine.

When I started on the Prednisone, I had 2 spotty periods (after 6 years without them) and now have hot flashes and only sleep every third night.  The Rheumatic specialist couldn't answer my questions and I can't find anything in the literature about Prednisone restarting menstral cycles.
Not sure if this helps but I am age 53 and still haven't made it the whole year without a period, normally make it 7-8 months then one will pop up.  Recently I had made it about 8 months without one until my rheumy had me tapering too quickly and my adrenals went crazy and I became very ill and at the ER.  Anyway, it seemed odd that when I became ill my period also started again, just spotting like you.

I did ask my rheumy if this was related and she said probably.  I think if you do some reading about the adrenal glands you'll see that they have alot to do with your homones and messing with them can cause alot of things to happen.

Good luck with your PMR journey!
