Sharps container disposal | Arthritis Information

For those of you that use injections, where do you dispose of your sharps containers? I was told hospitals, but where exactly? Do you know if blood labs have a place where we can dispose of these? Thanks.Talk with your Doctors...  some may allow you to drop them off there.  Some do not.   I have a friend that is a nurse and she takes mine and disposes of it.   I know that a lot of garbage facilities have sharps disposal also.   Mine says just to place them in a Tide (or plastic bottle) tape it shut and place it in the garbage.   I personally don't feel right about that.   So, I found another way.  Check around your area some places, dr offices, hospitals etc. will take them, but in other places they have no way of disposing them.  As stated in above post basically they are told to tape the container shut and throw it away.  Before disposing of my syringes and needles I break the needle off so that, #1 someone doesn't get stuck with it and #2 so someone doesn't use it after I am done with my meds. We literally had junkies going through the junk at the junkyard looking for needles.  meme

I get mind pick up by the drugs company too, but the hospital also will dispose of them 2 if i need them 2.

I've been on Humira since Dec. 04 and started weekly injections in May of 05....my container still has plenty of room in it. I've yet to deal with this problem. How often do you guys have to dispose of your containers?

Maybe mine is just a larger container?

Call your local hospital and ask.  They usually have information. Here we can take them to any one of several outpatient clinics  affiliated with the hospital.

OR call your agency that  collects your garbage, streets and san, private collectors.... they know. OR  ask at the local pharmacy, since they sell so many sharps, they usually know.

A regular sharps container is quite inexpensive and available at  any pharmacy. I wouldn't  use a  detergent bottle... sharps containers are properly labeled.

I was told you can take them to your local Fire Department.Medco, the company that sends me my Humira provides the Sharps containers free with my order.  I have only had 1 container and it is not nearly full.  I think your RA md's office will take the containers.  I think I will ask the blood lab when I go there again.  Seems like they couild take them.  This link provides info on state laws concerning the disposal of sharps.

wayney,

I check out the link you sent. Guess what? Arizona allows you to put the sharp containers in the trash. My doctor and pharmacy won't take them. People did through the trash all the time here, so I think I'll try the fire department.

Unbelievable!
