Shoulder Issue | Arthritis Information
I am new here. I have a question of my own. I have had shoulder
problems which have been diagnosed as rotator cuff tear and arthritis,
fracture and arthritis, bone chips and arthritis, for the past 10
years or more. I have pretty much constant shoulder pain and limited
ROM. Last winter I painted my ceiling. Before that the pain was
managable. Now it is non stop intense. I did an MRI this summer and
the MD now says there is simply severe arthritis and the only remedy is
a shoulder replacement. I did a cortizone shot, which gave me relief
for a few weeks.
At night the pain spreads down to my elbow and
into my back. I do not react well to anti inflams, so i dont take
them. This summer I ice the hell out of it. That gave me some
relief.
All my life I have been an excersize hound, yet, any PT I do only causes the pain to get much worse.
Anyone have any suggestions as 2 what is causing the pain to spread and also alternative treatments. I am 51.
I"m in a similar situation with my shoulder and other joints.
There is a short acting cortisone and a long acting cortisone. For me the short-acting is useless; the long-acting [Kenalog] lasts about 2 months. You might check with your orth surgeon to see which type of injection you had.
Have you tried the Celebrex [in lieu of standard NSAIDS]?
A word about physical therapy: I've discovered that you really need to impress on the physical therapist that a little goes a long way. I went through about 4 PT's before I found one one actually listened to me and adjusts my program to meet my needs. [I've several forms of arthritis.]
If the pain is spreading you might have more than OA. Hopefully you're seeing a rheumatologist who has distinguish the different types of arthritis and treat accordingly. Perhaps you should be ruling out RA or another form of arthritis.
