My sister had it done several years ago.  She was just off work for a few weeks.  Didn't seem to slow her down a whole lot.
I would think that it all depends on what you do for work.  Sitting or standing as it does take time to heal.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  I had metatarsal surgery, not bunion surgery.  I was on crutches for six weeks but was back at work in three weeks (I have a desk job).  Your doctor can tell you how long you'll be out of commission.

I would urge you to get a temporary disabled driver placard for your car - you'll be glad you did.  Visit the dept. of motor vehicles website, your doctor will need to fill out the form.  It takes a few weeks to get it so get started on that early.  Best wishes to you.

My neighbor recently had this surgery. Apparently hers was a complex case. She was in a cast and pretty much out of commission for 6 weeks. She said it's pretty painful [recovery], but I think this is a worst case scenario. So I'd ask the doctor for an Rx you can fill ahead of time and have on hand JUST in case.

One thing she did was spread the word that she was having the surgery amongst the neighbors. One neighbor built a special website and gave the other neighbors the URL. On it was a calendar and people "signed up" to walk the dog or go shopping for her during this recovery period. This was a godsend for her because she lives alone, has a dog, and doesn't have family in the area.
I had bunion surgery several years ago.  My foot dr. said I could be back at work in several days but I said I would not have the surgery unless I was off.  I actually got away with 7 weeks off.  I am not sure one could actually return to work earlier.  I was uncomfortable and had throbbing when I was walking too much.  Also they said I had to elevate my foot--above my heart--coud not do that at work.  I was doing real well at 4 weeks.  Also being out of work helped with the drs. appointments to change the bandage, remove the stictches, etc., etc.  I was lucky because my insurance paid me 100% of my pay while off.
