Ok, here is my question, my husband has finally seen an RA doctor who did some blood work and put him on predisone, he still shows negative for RA and sed rate not elevated. So he has sore joints to the touch and visibly swollen all pointing towards arthritis. But now the blood work shows his sugar is high and is borderline diabetic. So my question is could this possibly all be caused by diabetes? Could the swollen joints and the leg edema be caused by high sugar instead of arthritis ?Diabetes can cause peripheral neuropathy, which can exhibit as pain, numbness, and tingling in the extremities. Has his RA doctor ruled out RA? Some people do test negative for RA factor and inflammation markers, but still have been diagnosed with RA. The fact that the RD put him on Prednisone leads me to believe he might be considering RA. Prednisone can definitely cause a rise in blood sugar...were those blood results taken after he had been on Prednisone?
The RA doctor prescribed prednisone AFTER the blood work, so don't think we can blame Prednisone for the high blood sugar. I think the RA was thinking it was RA, but she wanted to wait to see if he responds to Prednisone, and he has not seen a difference yet, it's been 5 days.

BOTH DISEASES HAVE THE SAME ROOT SOURCE WHICH I HAVE POSTED IN THE PAST. YOU CAN NOT TREAT A NUTRITIONAL DISEASE WITH DRUGS AND EXPECT TO GET BETTER. YOU CAN ONLY ADDRESS SYMPTOMS TO SOME DEGREE.

ronbn562011-04-25 18:34:09Hi Dianna, and welcome to the forum.  He should probably call the RD and let him/her know that's there's been no response to the Pred. and what's the next step.

Have the RD fax a copy of blood work to his primary care doctor and then your husband should call the primary care for an appt. to talk about the elevated glucose level.  Primary will probably do further lab work and you can get a clear idea if he truly is pre diabetic.    Let us know how he does.  Lindy
Quit screaming with your capital letters Ron. We all understand what you have posted in the past, but we also have the right to make our own decisions, just as you do. ok after 2 weeks of my husband being on prednisone, no improvement. He thought maybe he felt a little better, but we think that was wishfull thinking. He says he really does not feel anything. Do you think the RA doc will try something different when we see her this week? What is another medication for RA she may presribe, and why didn't prednisone help after 2 weeks?Hi Dianna, your husband needs to get an appt. to see the RD and also his primary care doctor.  We can only second guess what the RD will do; could be one or two of many things.  Each RD is as different as each person who has RA.  Some of us are on the same meds, different doses, not started at the same time, etc.  We're all different.  There is no cookie cutter treatment for RA and to date your husband hasn't been officially diagnosed.  The RD may order xrays.  Call both doctors and schedule appts. and make sure that both doctors work together.
