Among 28 vitamin D supplements for adults and children recently selected for independent testing, problems were found with 8 products, 29% of those reviewed, according to ConsumerLab.com. Incorrect amounts of vitamins, lead contamination, and labeling infractions were among the problems identified. The complete Vitamin D Product Review report was published online today at ConsumerLab.com, as were separate Product Reviews for Calcium Supplements and Vitamin K Supplements. The reports include test results, quality ratings, and cost comparisons for more than 50 supplements, including combination products.

Good information! My doctor explained to me that the risk for Vitamin D toxicity is high and that you must have your vitamin D levels checked every 3 months.  The way he explained it to me was that perhaps your vit. D level was low and I began taking supplements in high doses.  After a period of time, my vitamin D level increases and once it returns to a normal level, the vitamin D should be taken in lower doses.  If I remain at the high dose of vitamin D the toxicity can bring symptoms much like the original symptoms that I began taking the Vitamin D to begin with.  I hope this makes sense.

So it is very important to listen to your body....if you begin taking Vit. D and you start to feel crummy again, perhaps you are taking too much and must have your levels taken.

He also told me that Vitamin D2 (a prescribed vitamin D) has been proven to be ineffective on joint pain, he recommends D3 OTC.  But when taking large amounts of Vitamin D there are also other supplements that are taken to ensure the absorption of the Vit. D, such as B12, calcium and folic acid.
