Cataract surgery | Arthritis Information

Well as it seems I have a pretty bad cataract developing in my left eye only from all the prednisone.  It looks like cataract surgery is in my future.  Has anybody here had this surgery that might want to share their experience?  I'm a big wimp when it comes to messing with my eyes.  Funny, I had both hips replaced like I was getting a tooth cleaning and I'm terrified of this surgery beyond belief.

Hi Bob! My husband had it done several years ago, both eyes, one at a time, also due to heavy Prednisone use related to a kidney transplant. He said it was a breeze! They gave him something in the IV to make him relaxed and sleepy and he said the procedure didn't bother him at all. As an added bonus, he no longer has to wear glasses, as the lens implants corrected his poor vision. Good luck with yours!!

Hi Bob, I've had cataract surgery on both eyes, (Had to be separate ops though,  they wouldn't do them both at the same time! )  I promise it was a breeze. Like you, I was truly terrified.

I was in my late 40's I think, and opted for general anaesthetic, mainly because I didn't like the thought of local anaesthetic, (as seemed to be the norm), and perhaps being able to see what was happening. No thanks - didn't want to watch that particular show!

I woke up with a covered eye, no pain at all, the whole thing I think only took about 20 minutes all up.  Next morning the dressing came off and hey - I could see clearly again, it was a little miracle.   A huge difference!  Problem was I had to wait 6 months before the other one could be done.  Never had any trouble with either eye since then, and that was around 20 years ago!  That's my experience anyway, and certainly not a bad one.   Good luck with yours!!

Jeanne I  have  had  both  eyes  done  and  inplants, cause  is prednisone  and  I  have  had  lazer  on  both.  it  was  wonderful  I didn't  know  my  eyes  was  that  bad  till after  surgery  it  was  like  somenone  cleaned a very  dirty  windshield,   If  the light  is  good  I  can  read  without  glasses, I do need  them  to  drive  because  of  glare.  mind  was  done  in  1982  and  I'm  very  happy about it  and  had  very little  pain.    I'll  be thinking about you  it's  an  easy  surgery  try not to worryMy doc says he doesn't use any type of injection as an anasthetic.  Just drops to numb/dilate and some kind of gel that also helps with numbing.  As far as seeing the show, which is REALLY what I was scared of.  He says that all you really see is a blurry, very bright light from the microscope that he uses to magnify things for him.  He says it takes about 15 minutes per eye and also prefers one at a time.

My vision is 20/25 in my right eye which isn't really bad.  But in the left....20/50 which is near legally blind from what I understand.  With the glasses he gave me the right goes back to 20/20 and the left gets to about 20/25.  Still, I only notice the improvement from them at night or inside.  When outside, even though the lenses are coated and also transitions, it still seems like I'm looking through wax paper with the left eye.
Yup, I had both eyes done too Bob. Really nothing to it and they served me breakfast and I told them some jokes, so we all enjoyed the day.
Not to worry!Bob...even though he won't put you to sleep for the surgery (most don't for this type of surgery) be sure and ask for something to relax you. Good luck with the surgery, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it will be!

Hey Bob

I am right with you on this one.

Just found out I have some cataracts forming on both my eyes.  Eye doctor says I need to have them watched and she will see me in 6 months. Been a bit stressed about that info...but since reading everyones post, I am begining to feel a lot better about the possibility of maybe having to have catract surgery, especially if I get to loose the darn googles.

Thanks everyone, for all the insight on this topic.

PS:  Bob, we will hang in together on this one...OK?
Bob...please know that the above post is not me. It's our resident troll ron, using one of his many fake names. You have to love the trolls.  I don't let anything like that bother me.  It's just someone that gets their jollies by starting another arguement.  No worries.

Bob
