How much does Methotrexate compromise immune syst? | Arthritis Information

I hope everyone is doing well! I come to you guys once again for some advice...unfortunately I've lost my Ins. and won't be able to start my new one until June 7th :(

I have been on Methotrexate for several months now, and my Psoriatic A. is doing "much better." I was told that Methotrexate would compromise my immune system...however, how much? I just came down with what "I thought" was a common cold, and unfortunately it has turned into a "huge" ordeal!!! I have worked with children for 16 yrs, and thanks to this I have been pretty immune to common colds...I might come down with one, once a yr. it that-and it has never "knocked me down..."

This time, I caught a cold out of nowhere, and couldn't get out of bed for 4 days!!! No fever, no body aches, just a cold...needless to say I am still feelling wiped out...maybe this is just a coincidence, but I know my body pretty well, and can't help but think that this has something to do with my immune system being compromised due to Methotrexate. Besides doing the obvious: taking extra Vitamin C, cold meds, cough syrup, etc. is there anything else I can do to strengthen myself? Is this how fragile I will be now

Any advice or comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Sandy.
Hi sandy,

Cheer up , we all have our bad days. Methotrexate did knock me down at some point but gradually i got used to it somehow. Methotrexate may decrease the activity of your immune system, and you may infections like the ones you had " the common cold". It also makes you feel fatigued and worn out. I would suggest that you tell your rheumy about how you are feeling. MTX does not also go well with alcohol avoid it as much as possible. MTX  is usually  taken together with folic acid to counter the side effects of MTX  again talk to your doctor.

Try chewing little pieces of pink bismuth tablets they do work on intestinal issues.

You could try eating foods that help fight nausea such as hard peppermint candy, peppermint tea, ginger ale and bananas.

Eat whatever you notice makes you feel better when you're sick olives also work magic for me try them !
Get well soon.

Hi Sandy, each of us are different.  Some individuals have no infections, colds, etc.  Others are plagued with them and some have an occasional one.  We're all different.  Talk to your RD about your concerns because there isn't one answer fits all when it comes to how meds work on us.  Wish it were different, but it's not.  Hope you feel better soon.  LindyThanks to both of you for your kind and uplifting comments...I'm still recovering from my cold, or whatever it is I have...Unfortunately I don't have Ins. at the moment, so I don't have anyone to call, I guess there is always the County Hospital in case of an emergency, however right now, I'm just frustrated and a bit down...nothing a Dr. can do, anyways...

Thanks again!

Sandy.
