hi all cant believe what has happened now. the hip pain i was having iis nothing compared to this and according to doctors a freak coincedence. i have broken my thigh bonejust getting out of a range rover and putting my foot on the floor thought it may be due to pred but doctor says bones look ok hope everyone is keeping ok. this is from my hospital bed as i now have to have a steel plate and of course the pred will delay recovery supposei will haveplenty of time to post love to you all

Lynseylou - I'm so sorry to hear this, what a shame and how horrid! I broke my leg years ago (skiing! my own fault!) and had to have a plate then. The pain of a break is really rather exquisite isn't it   - believe me it improves drastically once the metal is in there!
I don't know about speed of bone healing with steroids - but funnily I haven't had any skin healing problems at all and 2 months ago tore my knee ligaments (skiing again!) and thought it would take ages, the doctors were amazed at how quickly the knee became stable and I was out of the brace in 4 weeks with orders to then just use it outside the house. I used it about 3 or 4 times but found it easier to walk without. I'd been quite worried about how stable the knee would be because the medial cruciate ligament is gone and won't heal without surgery - I'm amazed, so far I've felt nothing!

By the way - were you put onto alendronic acid when you were put on steroids? Sorry - I can't remember how long you've had PMR and what your treatment has been. If so it may not be a freak coincidence as strange thigh fractures have appeared in patients taking it and there doesn't appear to be a consistent time period involved.

And since you will be so bored - have you found the other pmr-gca forum which links from the northeast support group website? pmrandgca.forumup.co.uk - lots of fun and interesting posts which might help pass the time

all the very best - when are they putting in the plate or is it already done?

  Hi Lynseylou,

So sorry to see your post about breaking your thigh bone. I did not expect to see this kind of post this morning. Hopefully you are feeling a little better by the time you post again. Glad you have internet access

So did the doctor think this was just a weird accident? Is a Range Rover high off the ground? I cant remember what they even look like. I suppose if we dont blame the PMR or the Prednisone for break, we can blame them for the muscle weakness that does not hold our bones together like they should!

Thinking of you and sending hugs! Lynn

What rotten luck.  As Mrs E has already said, if you are taking Alendronic Acid then that could well be the culprit  I expect they will be doing a DEXA (bone density) scan to ensure that your bones haven't been thinnedas a side effect of the steroids.  I do hope the plate will ease the pain and that you will feel better very soon.hi all thankyou for yourkind wishes, in answer tothe question about aledronic acid no i havent been taking this. eileen i have had a diagnosis of pmr since feb this year but started with symptons twelve months previous. the op hasnt been done yet 3rd day was an rta needed taking care of yesterday. it has cheered  me a little to think that the pain will ease when the ops done it is definetly a pain i would advise people to avoid  fingers crossed it will happen today will keep you all informed. once again thanks for all your good wishes hugs and kisses to you allI imagine the weekend wasn't a good time to break something that doesn't come under "emergency"!  Yes - once the broken edges can't move and rub against each other the pain improves - I'm not going to say it won't hurt at all, that would be a lie, but it's the muscles they mess about with and the scar that hurts and it is a different sort of pain. I had to have the plate removed 15 months later (normal practice everywhere except the UK) and that time I took homeopathic arnica and had no muscle pain or bruises, much to the amazement of the hospital staff - many people had said the removal was often worse than the repair!

Good luck in surgery - are you having a general anaesthetic or a spinal? I had a spinal both times and it was brilliant, no feeling sick from the GA! I had the plate put in in Italy and there I was fully conscious all the way through, chatting to the anaesthetists who wanted to practice their English
Eileenhi all op been done amazing what they can do with a hammer and some nails i have had a general anesthetic and along with pmr struggling to keep awake longer than afew minutes. was happy to be asleep ii would rather be asleep dont want to know what they are doing. eileen you was right thank goodness the pain is a lot better now. will be in here a few days now a bit worried because we have got an holiday to portugal booked for16th july was looking forward to the rest will just have to keep my fingers crossed. big hugs to all

Didn't mention the fact that orthopaedic surgery is more like a day trip to a DIY store with hands-on experience cos I thought it might worry you!!!! Hammers, nails, screws and electric drills - just grown ups pretending to be little boys! One of the reasons there are not a lot of women in it is because of the sheer strength needed to get a hip replacement sorted out.

Wonderful thing sleep - the world's best healer - give in all you can because after the GA wears off you won't get much and will be desperate to get home for a snooze! Noisy places hospitals, really not a suitable place to be ill!

Did they tell you beforehand if you will be able to put weight on the leg? I couldn't for 3 months with mine but it was a totally different break.

Delighted to hear the pain has improved - all positive from here on,
Eileen
So glad to hear everything is going well and that the pain has decreased. Keeping you in my prayers. Good to hear you are able to sleep and start healing already. lynseylou, how are you doing today? I'm glad the operation went well and you got some good rest....

freesia
lyseylou,
Happy to hear you are doing well. Eileen in right. Sleep is the best especially with PMR. Now that I'm off work for the summer, it's been wonderful not to have to get up early on nights I don't sleep well. It makes all the difference in how I feel with the PMR....that and being able to have a little afternoon lie-down.

I also wanted to tell you that I take" Super Lysine+ Immume System" everyday for my immune system. It's made by Quantum Health. Not sure if they sell it in the UK.   I started it last winter because there were so many "bugs" going around at school. It has Vitamin C, echinacea, licorice, propolis and garlic in it. I didn't get nearly as sick or as often as the other teachers did this past school year.    I thought maybe you might be interested in it following your surgery.

Gentle hugs,
JannieHi Lynseylou,
Are you still in the hospital? Hope you are feeling better and getting stronger.
Sending hugs your way.
hi nan yes still in hospital hoping if i do well i may be home weekend. just been up to toilet on my own with help of a zimmer but weak as a kitten. been in bed since friday though so suspect it will take a while got my strong fighting head on at the moment so fingers crossed.hope  everyone has a good day today love to you allOf course you feel weak as a kitten - you've done absolutely nothing for a few days plus you've had a massive insult to your body in the form of surgery. I keep pointing out - big strong and superfit Marines took 6 weeks to get back to peak fitness after 2 days on bed rest in a hospital with no meds and no surgery (study done about 30 years ago). But it's all better from here on in - you're up and walking and home has been mentioned! Take it slowly and steadily,

all the best, Eileen
Hi Lynseylou,
So glad you have a positive fighting attitude to overcome this setback. Great asset as you rehab. Set small goals for yourself and remember that the PMR can flare up if you go too fast. I'm living proof of that.
Keep us posted!
hi all didnt have avery good day yesterday just slept all day i am managing to walk about on crutches though so at least mobile going home not happening at least until beginning of next week will keep you posted

love to you all
lynseylou - so sorry you've had a bad day after doing so well but you have had a big shock to the system AND you're taking steroids so a double dose of fatigue-causing symptoms there.  Just give in to it (go with the flow) and, hopefully, you will soon feel much better.  Chin up!linseylou,
Sending you gentle hugs while you recover ...I know it's hard to be patient when you're a "patient" but do give yourself lots of time to heal. Your body obviously needs the rest. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to take it easy. I would imagine that the PMR and prednisone will probably slow your healing down some. Do you have someone to help you when you get home?
Sending you healing thoughts,
Jannie Sending you hugs Lynseylou and hoping your weekend is going well. Hi all once again thankyou for all your good wishes just thought i would update. My thigh is moving quite well really i am amazed at how i am managing to get around with my crutches. I aamstill very tired but my heomoglobin levels are low so they are keeping an eye on my bloods to see if they go back on there own this can be due to blood loss during surgery. I think the pmr can cause this to im sure one of you will know. I should  have been seeing new rheumy today but have had to cancel and go back on waiting list. I have got an holiday booked for the 16th of july to portugal as the holiday was not booked through a package company i had not got round to.booking insurance and dont now know whether i will be able to go or get insured if anyone has any experience of this or anything similar i would appreciate your comments. Hugs and kisses to you all.    Hi Lynseylou,
So glad to hear you are doing better.

Sorry, I dont know anything about holiday package policies. Maybe a statement from your physician would help??? hi nanatjj sorry i havent got back to you until now, but i did start to write a reply while i was in hospital but lost internet connection. Things have changed since then anyway and i am now home. I am doing quite well and feel better than i have done in a while apart from the fact that i cant weight bare properly on my right leg. Its funny really but the pmr does not seem to be causing me any problems at all does anyone know why this would be. Did they increase your Prednisone in the hosiptal or maybe give you some IV steroids?
Great to hear how well you are doing! Hope it continues and you can go on holiday - a lot will depend who you are flying with as some of the cheapies restrict the number of "handicapped! passengers if you have to use lots of stairs and can't. But given what is possible a month after a hip replacement you may be OK 6 weeks after this - ask your docs!

There's mixed thinking about the supplementing the pred for an acute event like an operation so some docs give a one-off biggish dose of a corticosteroid as an insurance policy, so to speak. Others have decided the risk is over-played and prefer to keep a close eye on you and monitor for any signs of collapse due to your adrenals not working properly. So freesia you are quite right - if they did give lynseylou a big dose pre-op it will still be helping the PMR. There are some docs who give patients corticosteroid injections for PMR - in some people it works having an injection once every couple of months and the steroid is only in the body for quite a short time so the side-effects are minimal. In others the pain is back in a week or two.

lynseylou - do tell us what happens about your holiday,
Eileen
hi all about the steroids, as far as i know i have not been given anything extra no one has mentioned anything to me. My normal dose at the moment is 7.5mg which was not controlling the pmr totally, so the doctor gave ma a tablet called arcoxia which i am still taking this worked amazingly well in taking the pain away. I suppose alot of it could have something to do with the fact that i am not doing a lot so i am resting a lot more than usual but (touch wood) i feel better in myself tha i have for over 12 months. Going to see new rheumy next thurday original appontment had to be cancelled because i was in hospital it will be interesting to see what my inflamation levels are like as they have been up every time i have had a blood test. Will keep you all informed hugs and kisses to you all.

Lynn
