So I finally decided to take a real look at scientology and find out what it is really about---outside of Tom Cruises ideas. You all should look at the "official" scientology web site. Just Google it. Basically, it is a cult of people who follow L. Ron Hubbard, who has written lots of books and apparently once knew Freud---but has never gone to medical school. Very interesting indeed. Mr. Hubbard does have some interesting ideas and many of his suggestions are valid. But nothing that he is saying is much different than what you can read in countless self-help books at Barnes and Noble, and the worse part is that he is calling a religion. Who does he think he is? The modern Buddah? 'cause he sure doesnt talk about applying his practices toward God or anyone else for that matter. I dont have a problem with his approach (possibly) that he is just giving us the tools and we are supposed to fill in our own spiritual beliefs. In fact I like that, not being pushy about what people should have faith in---that is a very personal choice. What I do have a problem with is that he calls Scientology a religion. That is misleading. It reeks of the suggestion that Scientology is in and of itself...enough.

I would love for you guys to check it out for yourselves and then come back and let me know what you think.
I found wikipedia's article to be the best information I have been able to read on it.  If you really get into it, it is some weird ****.

I have been there too, wondering if it was what they say and it isn't.  Sure, certain ways of eating healthy foods are right and yes many herbs help with health, but many herbs are as bad on your body etc. as the pills we take and i haven't seen anything herbal or in their way that works on such things as Rheumatoid arthritis.

I have hear rumors that this woman or that woman had his teachings work on them, but nothing real or full of proof.  Sure, someone who was told they have ostio may have a very very light version and what he says work, but what about the rest of us.

Also, I personally believe in god and that he gave us doctors and different meds to help with things.  I think we made RA through the years with pollution, additives, smoking while pregnant etc. and so the meds that help may have problems to them like liver probs elc. all part of life.

Should we ever fix this world and go back to doing things right, then maybe Ra would go away.  But that's my 2 cents.

I think that some of Hubbards ideas were interesting, but no one person can dictate everything that another person is supposed to think or believe. I guess I have always thought of people in general as either believing in some sort of God or Gods/godesses, or being atheists. I didnt figure on such a significant number of the population as following another human. Even the Dali Lama has a perspective on God. Paul, maybe you can answer this...did Hubbard ever mention God or whether or not he believed in God/Chritianity?

L Ron Hubbard also wrote many science fiction books .I think one of them was called Dianetics, I’ve read it and all I can say is what ever melts your butter

Cults are a special interest of mine because I've lost several friends to cults. I study up on a cult, learn all I can about it and then compare what they teach to the Bible. If their teachings are not the same or have any difference whatsoever then they are to be rejected.

I wouldn't go to a cookbook to find help to build a house and I wouldn't go to a hairstylist if I were bleeding. For some things in life there is no substitute, God is the best source for spiritual help, anything else is inferior. Cults have an agenda and they are trying to lead people away and follow them mostly for their own selfish benefit. Scientology is no different. What do they gain; money, power, influence and a following.

As I indicated this is a pet peeve of mine. Be careful when you come into contact with these groups they can lead you down a path that you may not want to be on and keep you longer than you intended to stay. They will say and do anything to gain a following. They will tell you things you want to hear. They are very good at deceiving people so be wise and ask questions. That is the best defense against cults. As always go to the best source, the Bible.

PM me if you want to know more. I'm not an expert on Scientology but I have learned some things about cults and there are websites you can go to for help on dealing with them.
Did any of you guys read that he believed that aliens created the earth and some evil alien, like the devil is locked up somewhere..............  My niece researched it.  Amazed me.  I find the whole thing kind of creepy. Tom Cruise is the best example on how they can play with your mind. I am sure he was strong headed to beging with, but add the cult, and you have some guy going out and acting like a total nut job. What gets me is how can someone tell others that what they think is the one and only way... the best way. Do they drug them into believing and giving money? For a while, actors and actresses were going around with this red string tied around their wrists... is that the same cult/religion? My philosophy is that everyone has to find their own truth and there are many ways to spiritual fulfillment and peace.  Problems arise when any group decides that they have the only answers, and everyone else is wrong.  As humans we always seem to divide ourselves into groups, and then develop a sense of superiority and entitlement because we belong to "our group".  It happens in every aspect of our lives and it is so sad, because it divides us and causes most of the pain in the world.  Whether we are divided by race, religion, social class, nationality, body type, sexual preference, or the many other ways we label ourselves and others, it seems to be our major flaw as human beings, and I find myself doing and saying stupid things constantly because of that flaw!

Hillhoney-I totally agree with you...hey maybe we should start our own cult! Ha ha. But I do agree, everyone needs to find their own path.

No the red bracelet is the Kabalah...dont know much about it but the hollywood thing was more of a trendy thing b/c Madonna did it so then all of the younger kids were doing it too.

You know I would like to add that even if a cult is teaching the bible you still can have some problems---look at David Koresh and the Waco incident.

I have a problem with any group that claims that it's their way or the highway....including many churches. That is my choice, maybe b/c I was raised in private Catholic schools. I dont want my kids to be bad people or anything, but I dont want them to feel forced to believe in somthing just because I do or dont. I am just more open minded about peoples beliefs. Dont get me wrong, there are alot of things out there that I find to be stupid, weird, or just downright funny. But it is not my business if that is what anyone else likes. As long as it doesnt make them morally or ethically disrespectfull people, I dont care. I have met "Christians" that are horrible people, and pagans and atheists that are the kindest people you would ever meet. It doesnt really matter.
