Liver damage | Arthritis Information

I went to the RA doc for blood tests and found out that some enzymes in my liver are elevated, signs of inflamation.  I was taking darvocet for my lower back pain, and have also used midol/pamprin for years--these past few months, I've really taken the darvocet on a regular basis--I haven't seen the RA doc since he called with my blood test results--he wants to recheck in a few weeks.  I just wanted to let everyone know to be careful about tylenol type products.  I also occasionally drink a glass or two of wine--not anymore!! Or, at least not for awhile!!

A lot of medicines cause liver problems. Usually they just pull you off the medicaton for a while. They've pulled me off mtx twice now and I am on a reduced dose to give my liver a rest.

You also have to watch the combination of tylenol products because they can hurt your kidneys. I don't remember the numbers you take, but any doctor can tell you. For instance, I take Mobic, so no Ibuprofen because they are in the same family. I can take tylenol and Vicodene but have to watch that I don't go over a certain amount each day.

But you don't want to miss those blood tests. My doc will not even refill my medication if I haven't had my bloodwork done on schedule.

When you are off MTX even for a while, how about your joints?  Do they flare?

When taking Tylonel meds, you can't drink, and can't take more than recommended. Otherwise, it is supposed to be the safest.

I feel like they do, but not too bad. I believe, but I'm not certain, that it stays in your system for awhile. They last time they took me off 8 tablets once a week for a couple of weeks and then put me on at 6. I certainly didn't feel as well. But if they don't do this you can develop cirrohis (sp?) of the liver.

I know that they are supposed to do routine liver biopsies, but my doctor has never brought it up. But he is also requiring blood tests at a minimum of ever three months.

I don't drink anyway. But I didn't know it was a problem with Tylonel.

Gracie,  I take up to five darvocett a day.  No tylenol or ibuprofen.  Should I worry?  Anyone know? What is the ingredients in darvocett?  Most paim meds have a base of tylenol or ibuprofen.   Most of the narcotic combos have acetominophen (Tylenol) in them. Darvocett and Vicodin included. Generally you can take up to 1000mg (=to 1 gm) of acetominophen (Tyleno) every 4-6 hrs. You should not exceed 4000mg (=to 4 gms) of acetominophen per 24hrs. You can take acetominophen with NSAIDs like ibuprophen (Motrin/Advil), naproxen sodium (Alieve), Mobic, Celebrex, asprine, etc. You can not mix the NSAIDs with each other though. If you are perscribed a pain med and you are not sure of the ingredients two quick ways to find out are to either call your pharmacist or research on the internet. You can also ask me and I will be happy to help if I can. The reason why so many meds affect the liver is because your body excretes most of them through you liver (it is kind of like your body's waste filter). The whole reason why I dont eat liver...yuk!Im on mtx, zoloft, amitriptyline, tramadol, voltaren. They say they are all bad for your liver and kidneys. Does anyone else take tramadol? My RD said that since I was on Mxt, Enbrel that the safest class 3 drug was Tramadol.  He prescribed it but was hesitant.  I only take it when I can't stand the pain any longer because it upsets my stomach.  I find that Advil works as well as anything even better than the Tramadol unless I take 2 of them. Does Tramadol help your pain?

I have been pulled off of MTX twice due to high liver enzyme numbers. I do a week of detox and try to clean my liver. I flush my system with lemon water and eat a clean diet for a week. My numbers reduce drastically and I have been put back on MTX in lower doses. I now take 10 mg a week plus the Enbril. I have a little stiffness but zero pain. If I start eating garbage ..I feel it in my body.

Very hard to maintain a perfect diet!

Roxy-5 Darvocet per day is just a little more than half of the ammt of acetominophen you can safely take in a day.  So you should be safe. How often do you get blood work done? My RD has me going every 2 months. The tramadol makes the pain bareable. It doesn't get rid of it though.I  just recently started it I take two before bed the pain at night keeps me awake even though I take sleeping pills. The tramadol makes me a little foggy fuzzy I dont know what to call it. So I only take it if I need it which seems to be every night so far.
