Alcohol...yes or no? | Arthritis Information

I have been having about 2 glasses of wine every Friday night. I try to have dinner with my husband every Friday to catch up on our week, the kids, his job, my job etc. It is a wonderful ritual. Anyway..my new prescription for Rhuematrix (MTX) says NO ALCOHOL.

What about you guys????

I do only for special occasions like wedding or our once a month Friday Night Dates.

I try to keep it under one a month only because I am on the MTX.  But even the 1 a month usually pans out to one every 5-6months or so.   It is very infrequent.

I was on Methx. for several years with no problems. I would sometimes have 1 or 2 drinks on the weekend. Not every weekend, and sometimes it was more than the 1 or 2 on the weekend. No set pattern. I finally had to come off it, one month my liver panel went up 3x higher than it should have been. Humm, perhaps from the 1 or 2 drinks! I don't know why but it's been normal ever since. And I still have those occasional drinks. I know they say your suppose to be careful in the sun with Methx. too. Ha, not me, I couldn't get a tan at all. We spent a week in Flordia in the sun. Everyone else got a great tan or burnt. Nope, not me, I came home as pale as ever. No-one at work beleived I even went. My RD, literature, etc. says absolutely no alcohol and I follow that advice.  Why put more stress on your liver by adding alcohol.  I;m 61 years young and my liver has been through it all so I treat it with kindness.  It may be ok for younger people but I'd be very careful. My doctor says no alcohol while I'm on MTX, but I have a glass of wine the odd time.  By that, I mean at the most, maybe 2 glasses/month.

Ok, I live on the edge...

Paxil, Mtx, Norco (with tylenol) all say "No Drinking". Well, I just can't stand to be told no. So, I have my cocktails at night, always have. Have very regular blood test, check for all nasty stuff. Never had any problem, all functions are as they have been, well within normal levels. If that should change, I'd give it up.

Now I know I'll receive unwanted advice from some of you, but this is my experience and I'm just relating it to you. So, comments are cool but I've got a mom!

Always love your attitude Mike

I'm completely off alcohol with MTX but then alcohol never agreed with me anyway. I might have a sip of my husbands wine if it's not a MTX day but rarely. My rheumy is not opposed to one glass once in a while but why take the chance, especially if you're on tylenol too like I am.

Over 30years ago, when I was on drugs alcohol was a no no.

For the past 15years I have been drinking a small glass of whisky/rice wine steeped with formulated herbs twice a week before going to bed. Alcohol has to be over 40% to bring out the goodness of herbs. Some of these bottles have been steeped with herbs for over 10years, as I fear wild lingzhi may one day deplete in the forest, so I keep in many bottles. Another reason is I am a frequent flyer and I buy alcohols at airports tax free. It helps arthritis and also digestive system. No drug for over 15years!

I am on the MTX and I asked my RD about alcohol. He said 1-2 glasses of wine or drinks are okay 2-3 times per week are okay but he said no binges....which is okay cause I am such a light weight the past few years anyways. I really only have maybe one drink per week though just because I dont ever really think about it that much. I went to a baby shower last week and the hostess offered us mimosa's. I got a total buzz off of one

Cheers!

I'm like Mike....except my doctor says it's fine.

I'm not a heavy drinker....but I would say a regular drinker. I drink several glasses of wine a week and my blood test have always been fine.

I honestly don't think a sip of your husbands wine even on the day you take your MTX is going to make one bit of difference at all.

I wished I had Mikes boldness! I am such a "lilly livered" freak! if it says dont do it I say Okay......and, man, ...am I bored....needless to say, I dont drink, ever(anymore anyway, RA I used to drink like a fish)

DC

I haven't been a party drinker in years so I don't miss that. Now if I drank like I did in my younger years I'd really have to rethink my ideas on this drinking thing; but what I drink I don't consider a problem....and more improtantly neither does my doctor.

BUT; as we all know these doctors vary greatly on their ideas of right and wrong.

I cut out alcohol years ago, I order a soda or lemon water when i go out.  It doesn't stop me from going where i want, i just drink what I can.I do have alcohol from time to time, but it really affects my RA.  I pay for it the next day with more pain and swelling.  So I try not to have it very often.  It's the one thing in my diet that I can definitely tell has a negative effect on me :(

It does the same thing to me, TG.  Always sore and swollen after drinking.  I guess that's a good thing...keeps me from over doing it.

Well..thanks for the input. I think I will continue my 2 glasses on the weekend. I have given up caffeine and sugar and I really like my wine on the weekend. I guess if my liver numbers go up then I will curtail my activities!!

I have one drink a month... but sometimes I cheat and have two.  I've kept it to one though, mostly.  Pick a special day of the month- a holiday, a party, a friend's birthday, etc- it will give you something to look forward to but won't murder your liver! (feel free to taste other people's drinks too... but not more than one!)  And if you're DYING for a drink- give in!  We lose so much with this disease, who needs more torture?  Just be sure to attend your regular dr appts.  Good luck- it isn't easy, but we're in it with you!

i'm on mtx & humira & they say NO ALCOHOL. i didn't listen & had 1/2 beer. my ra symptoms got worse & it was like i took no med's at all.

bbooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

so my vote is no.
