I have a family member who has a child with downs syndrome. She is having such a hard time financially caring for her child. Does anyone know if she would be eligible to get disability for her child? Does she get money? and her child also? How does this work?
Thanks,

This usually depends on the amount of money needed for the child, if the child has special needs like is always in diapers passed the age of three, needs special schooling etc.
Many times they don't assist if the child doesn't need anything special beyond a normal child's treatment.
but, if you are low income, going to a welfare office or dshs, many states offer free child care payments should she need to work and can't pay for it, also they still give out food stamps in the form of credit cards these days that should also help.
It's always worth a try. But, I personally know people with a child with DS and they never got assistance and he was in diapers until he was about 12.
Try going here for more info: http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10026.pdf
The web site for Social Security is www.ssa.gov. They have recently updated their standing on down syndrome, which I believe acts in your favor. But I couldn't find it again.
First, talk to your doctor and ask them questions. They may be able to help you get through the system faster. The sooner you apply with Social Security the better. This booklet says that Down Syndrome is one that they start paying benefits for immediately while the final determination is made.
Hope that helps.
