Why does it always happen to me | Arthritis Information

Pity Party

I guess I can't do water exercise tomorrow.  I wonder if I got this from the pool?  All I know is I had open sores before from Enbrel and rd threatened to take me off Enbrel for good.  I am so sad.  I finally found an outlet that made me feel better and now I can't go.  Hopefully this will all blow over and I can go to pool next week.  I may go see doctor tomorrow.

Athlete foot is common symptom for most arthritics.  Rashes appear in legs, arms and body are common too. Watch out, most likely there will be a flare up soon!

In my non drug treatment I boil wild lingzhi with licorice and drink it three times a day for a couple of days. Another area to watch is your digestive system. Sometimes the stools are hard or irregular release of bowels. Perhaps eat more fibre fruits will help and drink more water. These are my experiences.

I'm sorry Roxy. If it is a fungus, the doctor will probably just give you a fungal creme and take you off the Enbrel until it clears up which is hard. I got one in my groin area and it took a few weeks to clear up.

Be sure you do get it checked right away because skin infections can turn into septis very quickly if you are on Enbrel and you don't want that. My doc really emphasized that one to me. I got the full lecture. So, don't second guess this one. Have your RD look at it.

I'm back on the Enbrel and watch my skin carefully now. The doc also said to keep body areas dry. I use baby powder and the ointment if I suspect anything.

You are doing good. This is just a set back. I'm so sorry to hear that you are hurting, especially when you are inspiring the rest of us with your efforts.

Roxy,
I know your discouragement all to well!  It seems no matter what I do in life, something always comes along and screws it up!  Hang in there... this too shall pass!

I have a fungal infection on my foot and am in the process of clearing it up.  I never had a fungal inf. till I started Enbrel...whoppee something new. You'll get back to the water, just a little glitch.

LISTEN ROXY I STARTED WATER EXERCISES ABOUT 2 MNTHS AGO AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME THERE IS ALOT OF PEOPLE WALKING AROUND IN BARE FEET ANYWYAS GET SOME WATER SHOES AND MAKE SURE YOU CREAM THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR FEET WE TEND TO GET LOTS OF CRACKING IN OUR FEET WHICH IS LIKE A OPEN SORE FOR GERMS ANYWAYS I STARTED TO PAY MORE ATTENTION AND NOW NO PROBLEMS...TERESA

Are foot fungas' a side effect of the enbrel...I dont want to deal with that...Just when I start getting exciting about starting Enbrel now I keep reading about all of the nasty side effects. Kind of frustrating.

MY darling RA always flares when I injure myself.  My feet were flaring.  They still are - swollen, hot and red but much better than yesterday.  I am not going to rd today.  I know I can't get in so I am going to nurse my feet this weekend and not take Enbrel unless they get better.  I want to get in the water next week !

I am going to get some neosporin or try to get a friend to get it for me.  I really don't feel like doing the penguin walk in the store

Thanks Teresa/Gizzy.  I am getting some water shoes.  Now it makes so much sense.  I have been jumping up and down on the bottom of a cement pool  DOH

I sure am dissapointed going back to a sedentary day.  I was having so much fun.  I didn't want to miss one.

This is the second time as you mentioned having such mystery sores. Those ones you had last time were pretty serious. I remember the pictures. I've had RA for 12 years and have never had anything simular. As much as you love your embrel if it is in fact causing such problems you should definately let your doctor look at it. A change might be the best thing for you and eventually you'll say to yourself "Why did I put this off so long?"

Would one day at the pool cause such a serious reaction so quickly? I mean I can understand it if you had been at it for hours a day every day for a week....but one time?

Take care of those tootsie's. I hope you feel better. I wish some of us were closer and could help you out. The few times I've had serious foot problems I remember how difficult it was. How you manage alone I''ll never know. You're a lot stronger than even you know.

Keep us posted.

Roxie,

I agree with Lovie. Please get this physically looked at by the RD or his nurse. Fungal infections are very common with Enbrel as are bronchitis. This is because Enbrel suppresses our immune system so much that infections that would never have bothered us before can now have a field day.

A skin infection, even a sore, can develop into septis.  My face breaks out all the time and my doctor even gets alarmed at this. While this is probably not serious, as all these medicines tend to thin our skin, it is not worth taking the risk. Septis can break down the entire surface of your skin. It is one of those complications that can put you in the hospital fighting for you life.

So, maybe you just need swim shoes. But please just check it out to make sure. Make me into an alarmist. But then we will all know you are ok.

I have my rd appt. on the 23rd.  Lovie, I went to the pool three days in a row for 1.5 hours each day.  You know me, I had to jump higher, stretch longer and move faster than anyone there - the age group is 50+  I think I did this to myself.  I also have to ditch the 70 and 80 year old men who want to "chat" and don't even do the exercises.  Then I was in a hurry on Wed. and did not shower after I got out of pool which I always do.  I think leaving the chlorine on my skin irritated it.

I hope my rd is ready to sit down and talk.  Between these sores and the muscle aches I have been getting, AND I want to talk to him about long term disability, me being put on leave at work and NOW these sores.  We will see what happens but I am still attached to Enbrel.  It has been lasting the entire week.   My joints are so much better and the water exercise was really helping my ROM.

Next week is going to be an intense one.  I go see my rd on the 23rd and my appt. with disability is the 24th.  I get nervous just thinking about it.

Today I am off my feet except for accupuncture which I really think helps with the pain.  It hurts to walk on your heels only - try it - I really feel it in my butt and hips.  Feel like I am falling apart today but I know this is going to heal.  I promise, if they look worse, I will go to clinic.

Love, Rox

Well then you could be right about the pool and this weeks routine being part of the problem. Sounds exhasting!!

Hopefully the accupuncture will also help your feet this week!! Got my fingers crossed for you.

roxy girl!

sorry to hear about all this!

i understand what you're going through. i had a very similar experience. swimming seems to be the one excersice i can actually do, with my ra all over. i recently contracted athlete's foot, probably from walking barefoot at the pool, and i haven't been back since. it's taking forever to heal due to a lowered immune system. at the same time i somehow contracted a terrible stye in my eye that got so swollen & infected i needed antibiotics. of course, this means no humira or mtx until the antibiotics are done. so now i'm forced to either walk or ride my bike for excercise, or be lethargic. guess which one i've been choosing, now that i'm the 1-eyed pirate & all.

i hope your feet get better & you get a whole bunch of pain free days!

Roxy, I'm so sorry you're going through this.  I know how much you were looking forward to this.  One thing I would caution about in a public pool is water quality.  I have a swimming pool (unheated) and a hot tub and I am obsessive about this, especially the hot tub.  I live in New York where the law requires that water in all public pools and spas must be checked hourly.  You can also do it yourself.  You can buy test strips that are easy to use, you just need to know if they treat the water with Bromine or Chlorine and get the appropriate ones.  I know from experience what "bad" water in a hot tub can do.  I had been neglecting my hot tub, and after using it one night I had a rash and terribly itchy skin because the PH was out of whack.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Ms. Joey,  I am glad to hear someone who understands.  After not moving so long, it was feeling so good.  I hope you are back in the water soon.  I love it.  My feet are healing and I bought water shoes so as soon as they are healed - I will be diving in.

Nina,  Good advice.  The club I go to is very reputable and they are very good about maintenance.  I think it is just the rough bottom in the pool.  My body likes to flare when I get injured.  Which is too often    So sorry to hear about your foot problem but glad that's it's getting better.
