tearing sensations in calf of leg? | Arthritis Information

Here goes my 2nd question of the day....

Have you ever felt a tearing sensation in your calves?  I am having it again and believe I am starting to have another flare.  My DR's look at me like I'm nuts but I get this feeling when my joints hurt badly (during a flare I guess)..anyway it feels like the muscle is tearing away from the bone or some thing..almost shredding.  It's mainly in my right calf, kinda on the inner front side - next to the bone.  It happens when I stand from sitting, lasts for about 10-30 seconds and then it gets "walked out".  It doesn't happen when I am feeling good and never happened before all this joint stuff.  Could this have to do with my circulatory system?

Has anyone else felt this?

Also, does anyone else feel the flare?  In my hands I actually feel a light tingling (not pins and needles - a light tingling), then sometimes the palms of my hands will sweat badly too.  It's almost like I can feel the swelling - Any takers for this sensation?

Just diagnosed today....been suffering since last August - after a severe allergic reaction....

Sounds kind of like shin splints to me?  What does everyone else think?

Thank you, Hillhoney

It's not on the shin though...it's more on the inner side - in soft tissue and it goes all the way up to my knee when I stand up - it makes you catch your breath when it happens and after a few steps it is gone.  When I search the symptoms on line all kinds of scary stuff comes up..MS, vein problems, restless leg - I don't think it's restless leg though.  I thought maybe someone else had similar sensations....

Ugh, I have been crying all day...  and now Iam hurting too.... today has been a sucky day.

It might be tendonitis or bursitis which is pretty easy for them to diagnosis. Did they actually examine your leg? I have both the tendonitis and bursitis act up when I flare. And, I can always feel a flare. For me, the flare hits multiple places, I feel much tired, my stomach will hurt or be upset, things swell, I can't do things I did just yesterday.

If they have examined you, and I mean physically looked hard at your leg and don't see anything then push for something more like a xray or MRI. Tendonitis will show on a MRI. Bone cysts can also appear like they have in my shoulder from the RA. Mine sits right in the joint of my shoulder like a ball bearing.

I wouldn't accept their answer. Push harder. If it hurts like that, there's a reason.

I've had exactly that same feeling - but in my feet. It feels as though the flesh is being ripped from the bone - almost makes me afraid to take a step. Plus - it's really just creepy. I have to say, I haven't had it since I started on the MTX. I'd almost forgotten about it. I hope once you start treatment, it goes away. A diagnosis is a really major step. It's horrible to be diagnosed, but it's not as though you don't have the disease if they don't diagnose you. And once you're diagnosed, you can work towards getting better.

Oh, thanks!

At least I know that I am not crazy.....  you are all right.  It could be a bone cyst or some weird sensation from what ever.....  My rhummy just looks at me like I have a 3rd eyeball or something when I have brought it up to him....  Maybe I should try a new rhummy too.  If it weren't for my GP (a new one of them) and her seeing the pain I was in - I STILL wouldn't have had a MRI (and I had asked for them from rhummy) - anyway the MRI diagnosed the RA - which is believed to have been set off by a bad allergic reaction to Augmentin.

Thank you for making me feel welcome..

I'm sorry you're having so much pain, and I hope you can get some answers soon!

something you could try, it may or may not work, is to drink a glass of tonic water every day. It has quinine in it and that helps with leg cramps. You may not be having this pain due to spasming of the muscles, but if you are the tonic water should help. It is worth a try since the stuff only costs a dollar, you can squeeze some lemon in it to make it taste better. It wont hurt you if your pain is not from muscle cramps. My RD is the one who put me on to that and it worked great for my legs cramps, and the charlie horses in my calfs that were waking me up at night.
