Good site about filing for SS | Arthritis Information

My girlfriend is in the middle of her fight for disability. She just won her work disability claims and is working for SS. I told her about my problems. She has Chronic Fatigue and FM. When she was working, she was an occupational therapist. After discussing my problems, and she hasn't even heard the latest, she did some research and found this disability lawyer's web site that is in my area. However, he does cases across the country. There are a lot of interesting articles and I think I'm going to talk to him after I talk with my doc on Thursday.

good tip, Deanna, I think that when my time comes to file I am hiring legal representation first thing...the process sounds scary otherwise.

I think I am going to have to file soon. I struggle with it even though I can't really walk.

At good moments, I think, oh I can hold on a bit longer and try to save some more money back (this doesn't seem to work well). Other times, I'm ready for any kind of relief.

Don't file on your own, make sure you're working with an attorney who specializes in SSD.  I've filed and with an attorney.  The attorney's office will walk you through everything.  I'm waiting for a decision now.

Most of those attorneys dont collect unless you do right?

That's right. They don't collect until you get your award from SS and their is a limit on exactly how much they can collect. They get a cut out of the amount you are owed from the time you file. What SS does is they pay you back to (I believe) 12 months before you filed in one initial lump sum and then pay you montly thereafter. The lawyer takes his cut out of that iniitial lump sum.

Since lawyers tend to win more cases than people who are filing on their own and faster, it seems really worth it to me.

I have my papers right here.  I was told they won't help you until you have been denied.  Maybe right before I go to SSDI doctor appt. I will take a swim in the creek

I dont know if they all are like that though...why would they want you to be turned down first?

Not all; are Turned Down or Denied the First time. Each case is different, and I strongly suggest you obtain the service of an Attorney. Your chances of SSI & SSD are individual & case sensitive.

The attorney collects when you do, and their is a CAP on the Amount the Attorney can Earn! So Apply with a Positive Attitude and be Honest, also as stated earlier here, always describe your Worst Days, Minutes, Hours... you are entitled to your Good Days!!!!

After our Head-On -Collision with a Drunk - Uninsured - Illegal - Motorists ( He previouly had 8 DWI's), my Wife applied and received SSI & SSD, keep in mind her Carrer as an RN ( Physc Nurse, mostly dealing with the Criminal Insane) ceased immediately, and her Income dropped by 75%, she was Awarded Full disability with an Attorneys help!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck

A lot of ppl get turned down the first and sometimes the second time they apply.  My mom has been turned down twice, now she is with a lawyer trying to get it taking care of.  She has stenosis of the spine and has had to have a titanium cage put in her lower back along with other problems.  She can't work, she can't function without pain meds, yet they've denied her.

My uncle who has MS went through a lawyer to begin with and he got it the first time around.

My step sister who is 30, supposedly has bipolar, what she really has is quack drs and the disease called laziness and she got it her first time without a lawyer.

The system is screwed up.
How long did it take for her. That's the part that scares me the most is the time factor because of not having any income during that period. If it wasn't for that, I probably have been on it a long time ago.My mom still doesn't have hers.  My step sister had hers within two months of filing.

That is the scarey part. I've heard a couple of months to a couple of years. There's no way to tell!

I bought several used books from amazon on filing for ssdi. They helped me figure out the correct terminology and wording I should be using. I think at least, without them I would have had no idea as to what to focus on. I haven't heard anything back from them yet.

Good luck filing! (I think it really does depend on luck).
