Can anyone with Arthritis share any experiences they had with work place discrimination and what they did to attempt to correct it?

Thanks'

"Armenia" ?  Where did that come from?  I guess when it asked me where I was from I clicked the top choice.  I was looking for the good old USA !  Sorry, like my sub title says....Newbie

Armenia--anyone even know where it is?  Too funny.

I've not experienced any workplace discrimination.  In fact, they've bent over backwards to be kind to me.  But if you're experiencing true discrimination, I suggest you Google the Americans With Disabilities Act, and make yourself very familiar with your legal rights.  Good luck to you!

On the board longlong ago and far away in another galaxy...  lolo I had to just put that in there sorry.  We did have someone who felt she was being discriminated, the company supposedly phased her job out, but after she was gone for a couple months it was phased back in and the job was given to someone else.    I know it happens but I have been very fortunate I have supervisors who try to have me do things that won't over tax me.  I can't remember who it was but maybe if they see this posting, they can add to it.  meme

BEFORE i FORGET AGAIN:  WELCOME!!!!

CHECK IT OUT.... I NOW HAVE A PICTURE AND THE CORRECT LOCATION..WOW

Work place discrimination eh? Thankfully i've never been through it, but its the last thing any of us need. I hope your not going through it at the moment. I do find some people i work with are a little inconsiderate at times, but i put this down to lack of experience with RA on their part. Some folk hear the word arthritis some times and before you know it, your hearing about what a sore knee ( or some other joint ) they have.

Hopefully your not being descriminated against, if you are - get it sorted legally. Nobody deserves that.

WELCOME ABORD by the way. And armenia is next door to iran, in case anyone was wondering!!!

Welcome Marcel

And welcome back from Armenia.

Barb

Hi Marcel,  WELCOME! (still can't figure out how to change color)

I once was subjected to discrimination not with RA but when I was pregnet with my son.  I called the labor board and they assured me they were there to protect my rites.  I mentioned to the boss that I had made the call and never had another problem

Good Luck,

Pam

Welcome Marcel!!

Marcel, I have not discussed with my employer that I have RA.  Fortunately I can hide it to some extent and I work around nurses and doctors.  Occasionally someone has noticed something but I just dismiss it.

Actually, my rheumy discussed discrimination with me.  He held off my official diagnosis for two years.  Not only do you have to worry about your employer but you have to worry about your health insurance.  As long as I can, I will try to be low key.

I'm sorry if you are having problems.  I agree that you sure learn your rights.  There are too many people out there who will try to take advantage of you or dismiss you because of discrimination.

Barb I had an interesting experience today at work.  A supply person came in for another teacher.  She was at my school last year covering a maternity leave and I first met her in Septmeber (she finished the mat leave in Dec).  She has always been condescending and talked dirt about other staff which rubbed me the wrong way.  I ignored her and went about my business.
Today she is back in again and I over hear her talking dirt about me to another supply person.  Her daughter is on the same swim team as the principals daughter so this supply thinks she is "in" when it comes to telling other people who will be transfered and who will be staying at my school.  She started a rumour that I am getting "canned"!!!!!!!  Interestingly enough, I had my year end evaluation yesterday with the principal and my performance is "exemplary", I exceeded expectations in all areas.  Not only am I staying at my school but I have been made team leader.  I was mortified to hear her spreading this crap.  When I confronted her, she denied having said it, I guess she didn't recognise me standing at the microwave not 12 inches from her???????

What do you do when someone uses their personal friendships outside the office to step on others at the office?

My principal knows that I have RA.  I am also on our local union executive and this is not news to the supply person.  I just don't understand how someone can walk into a workplace and start dishing out this crap and feel they are untouchable.  I have missed only 1 day per month since September to attend to union business, so it's not like I have been off all year.  I have not taken time off due to RA. She claimes the reason I am being "canned" is because I have been "disabled by artritis".
She claims she is taking over my job and has made plans to re-do my office in September.

Thanks for listening, I had to vent before I exploded!

That is awful RMaria!!

It all goes back to school and you thought your "friends" were your friends until they start dating your ex-boyfriend without telling you...lol. Or better yet they are two-faced, they are your "friend" when no one else is around and then when someone "better" shows up you are no longer talkable.

That person sounds like she might have been one of those people I just mentioned. Just over look her, if she is childish enough to create rumors, and psyc herself into believing her own rumors then she needs to see someone.

Just my opinion. Another day, clearer head, it occured to me that as a supply person she has many hurdles to overcome.  Before she can get hired permanently by our school board, she has to be interviewed by schools needing to increase their staffing.  We need 1 staff person.  While she thinks she is a shoe in, she has to go before HR before being hired as a permanent empoyee.  That is going to be a huge hurdle since it is so hard to get a permanent position right now.  She also needs glowing references from 3 different schools!

While I felt victimized yesterday, I am ok with all this today.  The truth will come out in the end.  I have a wonderful relationship with all other staff and she is the "odd" one out.

That is way to think RMaria!!

That's awful!  I recently got a new supervisor, and I did tell her about my RA because I thought it was important.  I am a social worker who works with children in foster care, and sometimes I have to move a client to another placement.  I have had really bad days where I can't lift anything and have needed to have help moving the bags.  We also have coverage days in my office, and since I have to take sick days to get my Remicade, I told her that I have to make arrangements to make my appointments.  It hasn't been a problem.  I am clear about what's going on, because I'm not refusing to do part of my job and I'm not asking for accomodations to do my job, just a few times where I needed help.  And, our union protects from any kind of discrimination.  You gotta love labor unions!
