Have any of you guys ever heard of the Antibiotic Protocol and the book entitled "The New Arthritis Breakthrough."  A friend of my wife, that has RA, says that she has been in remission for 2 years off of the antibiotic "Minocycline."  I was just wonder your experience with it?I dont know much about it...but I am interested. Maybe I will do a little research.Hello Arthritis Insight Posters,

I am new to the message board. I am not new to RA.  I have had RA for six years.  I thought I would reply to this message because I want to share my experience with antibiotics.  I use a combination of humira and minocycline.   I take minocycline 3 days a week.  I know from reading the meesage boards on the website at the Road Back that there are two theories behind the use of antibiotics in RA.  One is the thought that RA is caused by infection.  The other is that the antibiotics have an anti-inflamatory effect.  I personally believe the later.  The minocycline adds the extra punch to the humira.  I tire less easily and hurt less on the minocycoline.  You need to be followed by a rheumatologist carefully when on these drugs.  I hope this is helpful to anyone who is coping with this mean disease.

I used the antibiotic treatment and I really did like it, however, it felt like after awhile it really wasn't working, but I think it was.

I think that followed by the Enbrel helped me go into remission.

Hi Paleo, I have tried the antibiotic therapy, for about 3 years, followed it strictly, felt it didn't do anything for me though.  I went to a Dr in Mansfield Victoria who specialised in it with a Naturopath as her assistant.  They admitted me to hospital for 3 weeks to start me on the right road.  Took lots of supplements, followed a very strict diet for about 12 weeks, didn;'t really notice any difference except for the bed rest (felt less tired), like most of these drugs they say you have to catch the disease early for them to work and if you check out the Raodback website, most people who feel it works have not had RA for too long.  Best of luck anyway, I wouldn't blame you for trying it, I would try anything once.  Kind regards Janie.

I was on the antibiotic therapy for five years. I thought it ws helping, but I was getting severe damage while on it. I was not careful with my xrays and now have some pretty big problems with my hands, wrists, and feet.

Even on my best day with antibioitics, it was nothing like how the MTX has helped.

i just started that minocycline or whatever, i will let yall know how it goes.

So I guess Antibiotic thearapy is like anything else, it works for some and not for others.

There is no magic cure out there, but anything is worth a try if you havent found success with what you already have.

Paleo, I'm so glad you posted this. I am researching this now. My story about antibiotics is: I recently had a spider bite on my face. The dr prescribed antibiotics, strongest you can take my mouth. and an amazing thing happened. The second day of therapy I had no joint pain or stiffness. The third day, I felt ten lbs light, no inflammation in my body. No fatigue. I hadn't felt that good for ten years. I called a dr friend of mine who is a neurologist and he said I should research this phenomenon. I google searched "antibiotic therapy for rheumatoid arthritis" and found a site called roadback.org. I encourage you to read it. I am researching it right now. I spoke with my rheumatologist and she is reading the information also. I am willing to give it a try. Keep researching and see what you find, keep us posted as I will.

Hi all.

I've just finished a long course of low-dose (50mg, twice daily) minocycline, which a dermatologist prescribed me for a rosacea facial rash. It's kind of amusing as the rash seems to have been caused by taking methotrexate!

Being on minocycline didn't improve my joints, but the rash did at least clear up. From what I've read, it does seem as though minocycline has a place in the treatment of some types of arthritis.

Don't you just love having to take drugs to counter-act the side-effects of other drugs?! I have just returned home from a week's holiday and you should've seen the size of my bag full of drugs.  Of course, they were in my carry on bag too, in case my suitcase went missing...

ok so im not on minocycline, im on doxycyline, im sure its prolly the same thing.   so far no change though ive only been on it for a little over a week.  im just impaitient i guess

The antibiotic treatment is only second to Enbrel.  I personally know three people taking it.  One person is in complete remission and the other two are very functional.  I have a doctor's appointment on 8/2/06 to see if I can start the treatment.  As of right now, my RA symptoms are at a minimum and I will try to keep it that way, but you never know.  I have read some of the book entitled "The New Arthritis Breakthrough."  This book is very informative on this subject.  There have been some people with very severe RA and have been cured from this antibiotic.  I hope some of this info helps

I started Minocin in Feb 2000. Changed my diet a good bit, went the vegetarian way and ate mucho fruits and vegetables and quit smoking too. My story may still be here on this site someplace, I havent been back here for awhile. But anyway, after about 15 or 16 months on minocin my labs were back to normal and I now live a normal life. I even built a house for my sister, the whole thing except for the roof I did with my own two hands. Last month I rode my motorcycle from Georgia to Connecticut for a vacation and visit old friends, 2625 mile trip on a Sportster no less. Took the scenic way, Blue ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive in VA. Camped out along the way, fantastic time. Only drug I take is 3 Advil in the morning on account of my knees being spent. Whenever people ask me what drugs I take I allways say, well fruits and vegetables of course.

I won't preach about what people should do, I just know what works for me. I know of a lot of people who have done well on Minocin, and some who dont. Thing about using the AP is it has to be tweaked to fit you and there are other antibiotics you can add to the treatment. Sometimes Minocin alone won't do it. Doxycycline as was mentioned is not the antibiotic of choice.

Check out my vacation pics, thats me standing on Skyline Drive in northern VA.

Hello higgy! What wonderful pictures. I bet you had a wonderful time and had such beautiful scenery to enjoy. One thing though, camping along that lonely road was scary. Did you sleep there at night? Did you worry about wild animals or people? Not me!!! lol

Trisha

Trisha, I camped in campgrounds. There is camping along the Skyline Drive but there are lots of bears. On my way north I stayed in a rustic campground in Tn, so it was a deal. Then at Caladonia State Park in southeat PA, and from there I made it to my destination in Meriden CT where I slept in a real bed. On the way home I again stayed at Caledonia park, then at a motorcycle only camp in southern VA, and from there made it home. Only thing that scares me is NY, NJ drivers.

I have been on antibiotic therapy for 6 months now.  Doxycycline and Flagyl.   Only change is no swelling in my joints.  I still am in pain and feel nausas alot because of the Flagyl.

Would love to hear from anyone whom has gone through AP.  I'm really starting to get tired of it.  :(
