new...not sure this is the right place | Arthritis Information

I'm new to this site and not quite sure I'm in the right place. I have a 4 year old son who has been having some strange symptoms. Took to Dr. and he was perplexed. told me to keep a "diary" for the next 2 weeks and if symptoms lasted, I would need to take son to a rheumatologist (sp). These are his symptoms:

1. red, swollen finger tips (mostly on the pads, from the second knuckle up)

2. I notice this happens mostly after touching something cold. ie. ice, ice cream, etc.

3. "attacks" last 4 to 5 minutes then disappear.

4. fingers and thumb seems extrememly hard during the "attacks"

5. son complains of having a hard time making a fist at random times through the day. complains of tingling and throbbing during attacks,

All of these are pretty random symptoms that happen every 1-2 days. Some are worse than others. Sometimes, his little fingers look like little sausages when looking at them palm up. They are very hard to touch and he says that they feel bumpy during an episode. I have done some internet research and things are kind of pointing towards raynaud's syndrome. Dr. mentioned this to me, but said that usually, the fingers turn different colors and that the "attacks" are longer lasting.(However, he said he has never personally seen this syndrome, just read about it) Not very comfortable with that response. DOes anyone have a clue as to what is going on here. Thanks, from a very worried mommy

Raynaud's was the first thing that came to mind. Get a referral to a rheumatologist, someone specializing in JRA. Failing that get him to a children's hospital. And, do this as soon as possible.

I hope it's not that. But definitely can understand you being worried. Please let us know what happens.

Deanna

You are so 'on the ball' - I'm impressed how much help one person can offer.
