anyone trying to lose weight? | Arthritis Information

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there trying to widdle away the pounds. I have been working at it one my own for about a week and then I started back on Weight Watchers on Saturday. I have lost about 3 pounds so far. I have a long way to go...but every 10 pounds is at least one clothing size.

Anyone else working on the weight?

Of course I am, it's Monday morning.  I'll let you know if I'm still with it on Tuesday morning!

Hillhoney....I hope you last more than a day....but if you dont....I know where you are coming from!

I too went on Weight Watchers. I lost 50 pounds. It is 7 monts later, I have gain 30 back. Love the MTX. It slows your metabolism to almost a complete stop. I try to get out everyday and do some gardening and do some yoga stretching. Nothing works.I am 'trying' and have been doing okay, but PMS time is my killer and most vulnerable moment.  I am sort of there right now and am trying to hang in there.  I have been quite good for the last month.

Hang in there, I know you can do it!  Drink that water. Yes, I lost alot on WW and then gained it back. When I went to the meeting Saturday I spoke to a few people about it and they said it happens to a lot of people. That you gain it back the first time if you dont really keep the principles of WW with you all of the time. When I lost it the first time I just went right back to the way I had eaten before. Always an excuse to have one thing or another and not ever keeping track of what I was having. I was so mad at myself for letting that happen. I was a size 4!!! and I gained all of it back and then when I got RA I gained another 15 pounds. It really is hard, and it is a lifetime commitment. I had been told that before, but I really didnt realize the implication of it...but I do now.I've lost 110 pounds.  Now I'm trying to get the last 25 lbs off! BUT IT'S TOUGH! So I'm still very sympathetic to those people trying to lose.

yes i am! i think we all are. it's so hard, being on all this medication. and most of my med's say that weight loss is one of the side effects. hahaha!!!

i went to WW twice and they were very rude to me both times, so i'm not going back. but i'm glad it's helps those it helps!

ps- did you guys hear i ate a whole thing of cheeze flavored pringles saturday night??!! oops...

I'm trying to lose weight too. Need to loose 70 lbs.
had lost 15 before RA diagnosis, then gaind that
back plus 20 more. Quit pred about 9 weeks ago
and have lost about 20 pounds, but much more to
go.Hi Crunchy. here I am in Rome lighter than I was in CA. That's because I got diverticulitis again and have been on a liquid diet followed by a low fiber diet for 10 days. Finally I'm off my diet and I'm sure I won't keep off the weight I lost form the diet. That's because I'm eating pasta and gelato every day. If I could understand metric scales, I'd probably be more worried.

I am also trying to lose weight. I want to use diet to fix my cholesterol issues, because I REALLY don't want to take a statin again, because they affect my liver, and make it so I can't take the MTX... As far as I am concerned the MTX is what makes all my other meds work.

I havent gone  to WW, I'm trying to do it on my own, by cutting back a little, changing my eating patterns, especially cutting back on cheese and increasing things like veggies .

Right now I weigh less than I have in about 20 years, but need to lose about 50 pounds.

Congrats to those of you that have lost weight!  It was always very hard for me to gain weight..all of my life...until Prednisone

I actually made my RA worse by performing weight resistence exercises.  Didn't have much pain in right thumb and wrist until I did them and now its out of control.  Plus, knee always hurt, even just walking, while on treadmill.

So, I stopped everything, per doctors order.  Except, that I occassionally swim lightly as I feel the exercise helps me mentally.  So, I gained 15 pounds in 7 months.  I hope to get better so I can lose it.

Hi Bubbapedro

Just a tip that has helped me: Have you tried a stationary bike? I have arthritis in my knee (sometimes both) and right hip, but have been able to keep up the cycling (every second day) right through this current flare. This flare has lasted for over a year now.

It's interesting as I can't walk far without pain and limping, but I can go fast on the bike! I listen to music on my walkman - Pearl Jam, The Strokes, Audioslave - anything full-on.  it's my mental therapy time...

P.S: like you, i did weight training, but have had to give that away until things improve.

LindaK---If I was in Rome I would totally be pigging out on pasta and gillato!!!

but since I am just hanging out in the USA...probably the fatest country in the world...I am going to stick with my WW.

I have always had good experiences with WW staff except this one lady who was rude...but she got canned (yeah) and everyone else is supernice.

I have lost a significant ammt of wt in the past and the final 10 pounds were the hardest. You really have to stay with it at the end...It is always very hard..

I gained 10 pounds when I was on the prednisone and I still havent lost it. I dont get that one....I didnt even really eat more when I was on it. Oh well...doesnt matter now...I am losing it all!

That's great Crunchy. Yes, it is a rest of your life, lifestyle. It takes work to stay the course but you will reap huge benefits. I can't go back to eating the way I did for most of my life. Hang in there and soon a whole new you will come out.

Congrats to all who are even trying!

It seems to be a lifetime battel.  I was, prior to illness, very athletic.  I miss it SO MUCH!  I'd really started gaining weight once we'd needed to use prednisone AND the anticonvulsant drugs used for neuropathic pain.  WOW!  Those really slow me down!

My husband and I are trying the "Warrior Diet."  It's an easy diet.  We have just started it.  It's outlined on a site named after it.  It was suggested to us on an "isometrics" exercise site.

Last night, I had asked the doc on the webcast about "isometric" exercise.  He thought it is a great way to strengthen the body with no impact on joints.  It may not be for everyone, however.

Great to hear of everyone attempting their own measures to "shape up!"  It's a very individual "path"...what works for one, may even work for some, yet...most likely not all!

Hopeful...thanks for mentioning isometrics (which I had forgotten about) and the Warrior diet (which I want to research). I am pretty set on WW just because I have tried almost every thing else with no success and because having studied nutrition, I know it follows the basic principles of good nutrition. But I still like to learn about new plans, and what is working for other people..sometimes I learn some new ideas or recipes that I can adapt to WW. crunchy38925.3268171296

Hi Kay

There are some great recipe websites out there, I often use them for inspiration.  Tyr searching under 'low-fat' or whatever food it is that you want to cook with. I love the internet

My mom and I were just recently talking about my cousin who was born with a rare congenital heart defect. She was telling me how my uncle spent weeks going to libraries and doing research to find out which doctors/facilities were the best to have his baby's heart surgery done. If that were to happen now, he probably could have gotten the same info in an hours time. It is amazing how much more informed we have become as patients because of it.
