Question about travel and meds | Arthritis Information

My husband's boss is  sending us on a cruise to Mexico and Grand Cayman in March and I was wondering about travelling with syringes, etc.  My husband thinks I should just put my meds in my checked baggage, but I've had luggage lost before and want to take it in my carry on.  Or should I just skip my mtx that week.  I really hate to do that though.  Its finally starting to work and I really don't want to miss a dose.  Thanks!!!

When I was on Enbrel I took it on the plane with me. It has to be kept cold so I put it in one of those insulated lunch bags with a 'blue ice' pack. I left it in its orignial packaging with the pharmacy sticker on it, just in case.

I had no trouble at all. I just put it through the xray machine with my purse. I expected them to open the bag etc, but they just passed it through.

For going out of the country, I would definitely have that, and have the vial in it's original prescribed container. You must have the med with which the syringe will be used, and absolutely put them in your carry-on along with any other meds you have.

Be sure to have all of your meds in their original bottles, even if you have a week's dispenser kit, like many of us do. If you do not have the original bottle with your name on it, they could confiscate your meds or worse. Remember, they now go thru your checked luggage, as well, since we have so much added security. I'm sure you will see all of this when you get your travel documents.

Good luck. Hope you have a wonderful trip. We were in Grand Cayman 2 years ago and the snorkeling is wonderful! If you get a chance, and feel like trying it, the water is incredibly warm and soothing and clear. (Can you tell I love to snorkel?) It makes your body feel almost normal again.

Have fun!

Hi Donna,

What ever you do, DO NOT put your medication in checked luggage.  Carry it with you at all times.  Your luggage doesn't always arrive at your destination the same time you do.  If it happens to get lost, you would be without your medication until your luggage is found and delivered(not always the same day).  I have cruised and air traveled with all my medication including the Enbrel and never ran into a problem.  However, it always good to have note the Dr stating that you require this medication especially where syringes are involved.

As far as cruising, if your medication requires refrigeration, you can request premission from the Cruise Line to keep it in the Infirmary (Holland America requires you to fill out a form for this) or you can rent a refrigerator for your cabin if one is not provided in the cabin.

As Nini stated, Grand Cayman is wonderful and the snorkling is great!  Where are you going in Mexico?

Have a Great Cruise! Donna,

I forgot to mention that the cruise line will supply a needle disposal unit for you cabin free of charge.  All you have to do is request it and in the case of the Holland America Line, fill out a form in advance of the cruise. You usually have to return the unit to the Infirmary before you disembark at the end of the cruise.

I was told to call ahead of time with the airlines just to be safe, and to keep it on a carry on in my personal possession the whole time.

I have traveled a lot in the US by plane with my meds.  I take the usual--Mthx. and Humira and Folic Acid and Lecuvoriun.  I put the pills in a little baggy and write the names of the drug on them and put in a pill bottle.  I take my Humira in a small cooler.  I have asked security if I need to tell them I have a syringe with me--they always say no.  IT IS ALWAYS IN MY CARRY ON LUGGAGE.  If I were going outside the country, I would take the meds in the bottles from the phamacy and have a note from my doctor for the needles.  After I have he shot, I put the empy syringe in my checked.  It has always been there.  I do carry my doctor's name and telephone number just in case there are any problems.

I'd definately keep your meds with you. Better to be standing right there when they discover you have them so you can explain the situation and be assured everything runs soothly.

They're right too. Luggage getting lost is no unusual. You can replace a few things to wear but you'd end up without your meds for the remainder of the trip. You won't want that.

Definately don't skip them if you are just getting up to speed. Everytime you go off it's a set back you'll have deal with later. Only do that due to infection.

Have a good trip. I'm so jealous!!

I traveled with my Enbrel.  I just told security and they let me get on plane with it no problem.  Don't check it.  As many times as I have lost luggage flying, I feel like it is a 50/50 chance It depend where you travel. Almost all countries have different types of restrictions. So you can check & contact to relevant authorities to confirm that in my opinion I agree with all that say carry it all with you.  I have traveled with all my meds including my syringe with Humira in my carry on.  Security is fine with that.  I think if you have it in your checked luggage you will never see it again--it passes through too many hands.  I have not traveled outside the US with the meds but have taken it across country several times.  If you call ahead, some hotels will supply a small refrigerator.  One hotel I used my insulated bag--kept filling it up with ice from the ice maker.  Don't use the refrigerators that they have stuff in it to sell--many have sensors in them and if you move an item--you automatically get charged for the item.
