More about my knee | Arthritis Information

Went to my Workman's comp doc yesterday. They okay me to go back to work as my hand and shoulder was soooo much better. However, I told them that I wasn't going back as my ortho doc was going to do a total knee on me in Aug.
The doc was watching me and I sat there rubbing my knee as it was hurting. He asked me if it was due to my working and I told him no. He didn't like the way I kept looking and the tone in my voice. I couldn't sit still in the chair as the %&*@#% knee was now throbing. After a few seconds, he said that they had this salve that I could put on my knee. It wouldn't kill the pain but it would do a good job of dulling it. I agree to give it a try. When I went to stand up, my knee was so stiff and it made a horrible noise. The tears ran and I told him that this was going to be a bad one. He walked me out to the waiting area and the rest of the people in the area felt so bad for me. They gave me the salve and some Tramodal. I hobble out to my car and kept telling myself that I could do this. I had a terrible time driving home and then had to take the papers in to work. All I'm going to say is that if I didn't have to do it, I would have put the salve on as soon as I got home.
Finally, got back from running the papers over and I was in alot of pain, tired, and hungry too. I ate and then decided to try the salve. OMG, what a difference. It dulled the pain and I could get comfortable in my chair. The salve is a mixture of Ketoprofen 10% and Lidocaine 5%. Wish that I had this a couple of weeks ago. I was able to sleep without propping up my leg on the pillow and getting out of bed, slipping in to my slippers, bending the knee to pick up my newspaper, was all done without my usual screaming in pain.
So those with the bad knees, if you haven't tried this then ask about it at your next RA or ortho docs appointment.

   MarisaWow, Marisa Sue!

I know it doesn't help what's going on inside you knee, but if it gives you that much relief, what a blessing. I'm glad he gave it to you - maybe he really did understand how much pain you were in. Every now and then, something good happens out of the blue & in the midst of all of the bad.

When is your knee surgery scheduled to be?

Hi Marisa. Boy, do I ever wish that I had some of the salve myself. I'm in such pain with my right knee.  I so glad that it helps you. I left a message on a recorder at my OD's on Thursday to please call me. Well, I haven't heard from him yet. Monday morning I will call again. I have to set up appointment to have knee surgery.

Have a good weekend

Trisha

I've positively cringed when you described the noise your knee made. That cannot be good. Mine made an audible "pop" when the ligament tore. And, that's all I can think of when I read about it.

But I'm glad they gave you something that helps. Wish I had some myself. But I think I need to bathe in the stuff. If you find out the exact name of it, I'll ask about it.

I'm sitting here and I don't have to prop the foot on my old VCR box. Amanda, my cat, is lying on the bedside stand. She keeps a eye on me when I don't feel well.
Put on my second dose of that salve and the knee isn't throbing. You only use it twice a day. Before I go to sleep, I'm going to place some on my thigh to help with the muscle soreness from the knee.

Fiona, I should know when my surgery is by Aug.2. The ortho doc put a rush on the insurance approval. Will let all know when.

Trisha, Hang in there and don't wait to long to get your knee surgery. There's very little padding in my knee joint and in the x-ray you can see where one part of the femur is rubbing on the tiba. Of course my weight doesn't help the knee either. I carry most of my weight in my hips and butt.

Deanna, I have the jar of the salve before me and from what I can tell it's something specially made for the doc. I'll PM you with the info. When my knee made that noise at the workman's doc office, all he said was,"That doesn't sound good."

   Marisa

Hi Marisa. I know my weight is aggravating my knee pain. My poor knees have never had to support so much weight. This dang Prednisone makes me hungry ALL the time.  Between the tiredness ( little exercise) & the Prednisone, I'll never lose any weight.

Trisha

Marissa, I glad to hear you found something new to ease the pain. I would like to know more about it too, when you get the info.

It is so weird, there are so many of us now facing knee surgery in the near future. Mine is just orthoscopic surgery, but I am still a bit nervous about it. I have never had any kind of surgery before. I have watched my husband and my son go through surgery in the past year though, so I guess I will be okay.

But my knee is so bad and my mobility so restricted that I'm ready. I just hope the doctor says he can do it. I'm hoping the first knee can be done arthoscopically. I'd so like to keep my own knees.

Having had the arthroscopic shoulder surgery, I will tell you that it's not that bad. If they place a pain ball into the joint, post-op, it will cut down on having to use oral pain meds. Plus you get to use that lovely machine that makes your leg go up and down for a few hours a day. Ladies get your TV remote, something to drink, and a nice comfortable place to lay. Oh, I used a timer as I would get sleepy and forget the time.
If you do as they tell you to, you will have no trouble.

Marisa Sorry, I'm such a blond today. Forgot somethings.
Deanna, if your knee is almost gone, go for the replacement. I know that it's a longer procedure but it will give you better results. As for the anesthesia, I have problems too. I get a very upset stomach. With this last surgery, they gave me something before I went under and I had no trouble.
Kay, I'll PM you the info on that salve later.

Ladies, we will get through this and we can keep each others spirts up. Hoping that all goes well for all us who face knee surgery.

MarisaTo all of you - good wishes, all around. I hope the surgeries are all a success. Can't wait to hear all of the gory details. Where you are, we shall probably all be eventually.

I hope your recoveries and short, sweet, and without pain.

I know some of yall are facing total replacements, and I know that orthoscopic procedures are very simple...but I have never had any kind of surgical procedure ever. I have always been a healthy person..at least untill recently. The idea of someone cutting into my body makes me cringe...I know it is silly...but still...I am not looking forward to this at all.

I am also worried about pain afterward and if the stress will cause a flare...

I worry about going off medicines and if it's going to trigger a flare also. But the surgery itself is not so bad because you are not usually awake for it. They keep busy with all the prep, then you're out, and then you wake up in pain. Now, you are past the bad part.

Of course, you have the PT. But you can walk again. Think about that. You are going to have a knee that really works again. And, every day after that should be an improvement. After nine surgeries, that has been my experience.

This will be my first with RA added into the equation. I don't like surgery. I want to avoid it. But the pain that I had before surgery was always worse than what I had afterwards.

does this stuff have a name?  sounds like a bunch of us could use it.

hang in there!

Yeah! Pain in the knee. It's related to PIB Syndrome, but a lower life version.

Oh, you meant the ointment. Yeah what is the name of that ointment. I really want some.

I'm almost out of the sample of this stuff. As far as I can tell, it's a special order for my doctor. I'm waiting for my mail order to come. I hope that there's more info on this stuff so that I can past it on.
It's put out by HNP Pharmaceuticals.
Labeled:   #10 P-Ketorub-L 10%/5% LDS HNP I think that's the name of the stuff.
When I get my mail order, I'll post more info for you.

MarisaDeanna, you're wicked.

Yeah, I am.

It's PIK and PIB for short. Sounds really disgusting. Can you imagine going into your doc and saying "I've had significant PIK and PIB. What 'ya got for that?"

Oh, and I definitely want some of  Aunt Marisa's Ketorub. Yep. That ought to confuse the heck out of them.Sounds like it has some lidocaine jelly in it.I could sure use some. It should be an RA 101 supply. Should come with the RA decoder ring in my box of Chocolate Frosted Arthritis Flakes. Wow you got Chocolate frosted flakes?  I got the old Snap, Crackle and Pop with mine!!!

Ah, we do have some very clever sicko's here. "arthritis flakes" "snap, crackle, pop"

Love it!
