MTX and the Sun | Arthritis Information

Well, now that I am feeling better (I hope it last), I think its time that I start getting out and exercising and putting a little sun on my head.  However, I have read that you have to be careful while on MTX, so does this mean that you can't go to tanning beds or work out in the sun without sunsrceen?  My RD appointment, that was suppose to be this morning was canceled until Aug 4th, so haven't been able to ask that question.

Thanks

Phil

Beastly sun worshiper that I am (I live in Vermont but was born in Alabama so I come by it honestly), I love being outside, though I shy away from tanning booths, personally.  Anyway, I have not noticed any problems with the sun, though I have heard others complain that it has made them more sensitive.

Jeanne

I am very sun sensitive and I'm on about 6 meds that all warn about being in the sun. The sun makes me very ill, even causing blisters and flaring symptoms in my heart and lungs. So, I avoid the sun.

But as you can see, Jeanne has just the opposite experience. The biggest, most important thing I do is put on the heaviest duty sun screen, I cover up as much as possible and I always protect my eyes with sun shades. You should do the sunscreen and shades anyway because of the risk of skin cancer.

You are going to have to figure out how this affects you. You can call the pharmacist about this kind of question as well as your doctor.

I can handle some sunshine early or late in the day. If I go out in the middle, I get really sick.

I'm not overly sensative to the sun myself. I do use some sunscreen just because over the years I too have worshiped the sun a little more than I should have. Sunscreen just seems smart to me when I know I'll be in the sun a lot.

You'll probable just need to get out there and see what happens until you know for sure. I'd advise sunscreen to anyone....but that's just me.

Years ago when I was on Sulfersalizine I had a BAD reaction to the sun; and I can say without a doubt that MTX does not affect me like that.

i'm told you have to be careful in the sun if your on mtx. too much sun causes me to break out in little hives on my arms & i itch all over. lasts a few days & then goes away.

I havent had any trouble. I guess it just depends on the person, and maybe your skin type/pigmentation??? I am olive complected (Italian girl) so I have always tanned easily.

I can't handle the sun this year. I've been on MTX since March. The sun makes me feel nauseous. And now we are having this horrible heat wave here in Md. It is terrible. I have always loved summer, but now I can't wait for fall to come.

Trisha

I have dark patches from being in the sun and on MTX. Very splotchy and looks like a dirty tan!
