stopping mtx and motrin for surgery | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone,

Tomorrow will be my last dose of MTX for three weeks and my last dose of Motrin for a week as I am scheduled for surgery next Thursday.  I'd just like to hear others' experience around holding meds for surgery or for any reason for this length of time.  I am hoping I won't notice a thing, but I have to say I am a bit concerned about messing with the status quo since things are going so well.

I currently take 12.5mg. of MTX and 600mg of Motrin twice a day.  I am finally getting my thumb fixed.  I tore the ligament in it back in March.  So the surgery is minor but the Rheumy wanted me to hold the meds anyway.

Thanks, Jeanne
jeanne, I had surgery July 5.  I had to be off the Ibuprofen for two weeks... I hadn't started any other meds as of them for the RA.  I personally noticed a huge difference within two days and by the time surgery came around I was in tears every day, all day. My hands and feet had swelled beyond recognition!!

I do hope this does not happen to you, and probably won't because you still will have the MTX in your system.

If the pain does become to much, remember you can take tylenol and pain meds, I used a lot of Vicoden that last week before surgery... and ice packs!!!

Jeanne....I had to be off of mtx for 3 weeks due to a very low white blood cell count.  I really didn't feel any worse during the 3 weeks I was off.

Good luck!

I just got my surgery for one of my knees scheduled today. I was instructed to stop all anti inflammatories 8 days prior to surgery. I have to call my RD tommorrow and find out what he recommends as far as the Humira and MTX. I am a bit worried about stopping it, but not as worried as I would be if I stayed on it which some docs allow. I think I would hold off anyways.
