Weather pains | Arthritis Information

Was just wondering if anyone else suffers from pain when the weather is rainy or is this just an old wives tale.  I have been on predisone and feeling pretty good, but ran out yesterday and haven't refilled it yet, but this morning every joint hurts.  Its been stormy here all day and was just wondering if this can indeed cause it.  I have ran out of predisone before and it has taken a few days before the pain comes back and usually very slowly, this jumped on me like a ton of bricks.

Phil, the rain can really affect you as the barometric pressure changes. I always hurt before a big storm.

But it is very bad to miss doses of prednisone as your body can go into adrenal shock. I don't remember how much you are on, but you can't just go off it like that. If you are taking prednisone, you must take it according to the doctor's instructions.

When people do go off, they go off of it as a taper. The taper varies according to the original dosage and how fast your doctor feels you should go off of it. This is one medicine that you just cannot fool around with.

I ran out yesterday evening and forgot to get it filled, actually my fault because I was feeling pretty good and it didn't even occur to me.  Seems like thats the way, when your feeling good, meds are the furthest thing from my mind, only when your feeling bad then I start thinking "ok crap, forgot to get to pharamcy".

What is adrenal shock?  Doesn't sound good whatever it is.

pbowman,I had heard that to but now I can tell when a storm is coming 90% of the time.

Here's what is says on medicine.net:

If prednisone is abruptly withdrawn after prolonged use, the adrenal glands are unable to produce enough cortisol to compensate for the withdrawal, and symptoms of corticosteroid insufficiency (adrenal crisis) may occur. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting and shock. Therefore, prednisone should be discontinued gradually so that the adrenal glands have time to recover and resume production of cortisol. Until the glands fully recover, it may be necessary to treat patients who have recently discontinued corticosteroids with a short course of corticosteroids during times of stress (infection, surgery, etc.), times when corticosteroids are particularly important to the body.
