??? Sulfasalizine??? | Arthritis Information

Hope you are all having a wonderful Friday!

The DR just called, and he will be taking me off the plaq (it causes me to lose my hair) and am going to start sulfasalizine.

Anybody know anything about sulfasalizine?  He said he wants to avoid the mtx right now because hair loss is common - I've already lost quite a bit of hair....

Any advice or help?

Thank you, Jody

Hi Trixie,

The same thing happened to me with methotrxate + other adverse reactions. I took sulfa and had no side effects but it did not help me but

I'm on sulphasalzine (as well as mtx). In total I've been on it for about 6 years. It's one of the milder-usually-well-tolerated drugs and can be used in combination with 1 or more other 'disease modifying' drugs. (Such as plaquinal, mtx.)

If it doesn't do the business by itself, they'll try something else - perhaps Enbrel, if you can't tolerate mtx.

Some people can't tolerate the sulphur component of the drug, so don't stay on it. It's normally started gradually, building up in dosage over a month. You'll have regular blood tests while you're on it too.

Good luck and fingers crossed for a good result

I had no problems with it; and it worked well at the time. It's not quite as strong as MTX so I'll be curious to see if it can control your symptoms. I sure hope so.

Fingers crossed here as well. Good Luck!!
