Roxy is getting married and is concerned with the possibility of hairloss with taking MTX. I don't know of anyone that has suffered hair loss at the dosages we take MTX for our arthritis. Does anyone else know of someone who has had hair loss from MTX?

If I was getting married, I'd be concerned too!

Barb

I did initially have quite a bit of hair loss. I started taking a B vitamin everday (1mg.extra of folic acid) on top of what I was taking. I don't know if it was the B vitamin or if my body adjusted to the MTX (or the RA for that matter), but I no longer have any hair loss.

Take care

Barb

I would be so grateful to hear more about hair loss and any other tips about how to cope with possible side effects or progression of RA.  I have many concerns, but hair loss has me really upset since I am getting married in the Fall.  I am putting off taking MTX until I hear back from folks.  My husband -to be- is out of town and I want to be better informed when I talk to him about all of this when he returns mid June.  This forum has been a blessing for me.  I have so many questions and fears.I have had hair loss, a little thinning on the top.  What I did was went to a good hairdresser let her know what was going on and allowed her to cut and style my hair.  It is very short and it looks very cute.  Just wash, towel dry add some mouse or gel and off I go.  She told me if I felt it was looking too thin to ratt the hair a little and that helps.  I am getting a body perm just to help it.  Because it just doesn't hold a curl like it use to.  meme

But i think mine's mainly down to the thyroid problem, and it probably doesn't help that its waist length!  although i'm gonna have a major trim to take some of the weight off this weekend.

I have hairloss from RA (weird, huh?) but I didn't get any more from the MTX.  My solution was to shave my head ;)

Hey 6xmum;

I know someone esle that did that too, she just felt her hair was too hot for the summer.lololol  I do admit she looked very good bald, because she was very comfortable with it and I bet you look good too.  Roxy talk to friends find out from them as to who they feel comfortable with to cut and style their hair.  When you see the hairdresser tell them the problems you are having, and what is going on.  They are experienced at this and you might be very pleased with the results.  Don't wait too long before you start the mtx, with your wedding coming on you want to adjust to mtx before the wedding.  Just my opinion, but you will a beautiful bride, because all brides are beautiful.   meme

I will admit that I worried about this while taking MTX after noticing hairs on my pillow in the morning...hairs in the shower drain and hairs on the bathroom floor after blow drying my hair.  But I think what was happening is that I was just looking for these things now because I was taking the MTX and thought that hair loss might happen.  I just never noticed these things before because I wasn't looking for it.  KInda like when you buy a certain car and then all of a sudden you see that same car everywhere you go, but before you bought it, you hardly ever saw that car...lol

I talked with my hairdresser about it and he said the average person loses about 100 hairs a day and that he hasn't seen any difference with my hair.

Congratulations to you Roxy and good luck!

Kelly

Roxy; I agree with Kelly. I have long, thick, color treated hair (Yes, I'm blonde...but I like blonder!!) I've been finding long blonde hairs everywhere since I was 16 years old. I didn't start taking MTX until about 3 years ago. We all lose lots of hairs everyday but like Kelly said (Very wise post BTW;) once you're on MTX you start noticing them more.

I agree with Meme too; I'd go ahead and start getting adjusted to it before the wedding/honeymoon. It's going to make a real difference in the way you feel and trust me; you're going to want to feel your best during this time.

When they say hair loss I think some poeple get this fear in their minds that it's going to be like someone on chemotheropy and it's absolutly nothing like that.

You're going to be a beautiful bride!! Don't let this fear stand in your way of feeling better.

I am so grateful to all of you!  I am concerned because my fiance makes a big deal about my hair.  It is long and blonde (highlighted he he).  Anyway, I have had long hair so long and I like it because I can just put it in a pony tail to go out and play or wear it down.  I called my rheumy (learning your lingo he he)  and told him some of my concerns.  He told me I could make an appt. for next week before I start the mtx and he would answer any questions I have.  He said only one pt. he has had - had hair loss.  Help me out with any questions I might forget to ask !

I hate being so vain but I am so lucky to have found Brett, my fiance, and I want to be attractive inside and out for him.  Maybe its the turning fifty thing!

This website has been an amazing help to my accepting this dx.  Thanks to all of you.

Well, I am not going to comment. I have different effects. And do not want to hinder with my negativity.

I will say this I would go back on MTX if I could afford it!

Seems like it was a good one when I was on it.

Now Arava..that one caused me to loose loads of hair even with folic acid and multi-V. I was lossing so much with that one that I would have a ziplock bag full of hair each week.

Your not vain Roxy. I am not much into my looks, I do not wear make-up, or even fix my hair, heck I hardly ever brush my hair, and I worry about my hair falling out. I think that is why I just recently decided not to brush my hair anymore..lol...trying to keep the hairs I have left...LMAO!! I have yet to cut my hair for about 2 years now and it is down to the middle of my back which is the longest I have ever let it grow. But that is because I do not feel like going to the hair salon. But I fear I will have to go get it cut soon

My hubby 26 years old and is getting balder by the day...lol...yep I see more and more scalp each day...lol. From the looks of his balding pattern he will have the option to have a NICE comb-over ... LMAO!!!!Dyna, I took methotrexate and when I was done with it.  I guess it was a couple of weeks I cant really remember.  I started to loose alot of hair.  By the handfuls, well not exact handfuls but when I washed it a bunch would come out and when I brushed it I lost quite a bit of it.  My hair got pretty thin.  But this did not happen until I quit using it and I had been on it for 3 months.  I hated methotrexate and I think it made my bones ache worst.  Everyone is different.  The hair loss is not something others will really notice though.  It is not like heavy chemo by any means, but I did loose alot of it.  Good luck I have had significant hair loss from a medication I take for congestive heart failure. I also have long (waist length) blonde hair. I initially panicked about it, but realized I had to tackle this problem rather than be overcome by it. So....I bought some long-blonde fake ponytails ( each at a wig store) and I plan on buying the raquel welch clip-in extensions (0 something). If your hair is highlighted, you can get your hairdresser to color them same as your highlights. Even though my hair is still very long, it's becoming thin. I feel better with long hair, so my choice has been to keep what I can, and fill in with the extensions. I am saving up for them now. Hugs to all of you with hair loss concerns. Love, JuliahI lost agreat deal of my hair even on the smallest dose of Methotrexate.  I've been off it since Feb and  my hair is growing back.  It's very thick on top now much more than it ever was before.  It's very full from the scalp to my ears, then it's a lot thinner.  Looks like Jennifer Anistons hair style (friends) from years ago.  Not bad for straight long air belwon my shoulder blades.  No hairdresser need ed yet for me.
