OK, my orthepidic surgeon gave me the cortizone shot in my left foot 2 weeks ago, its still swelled and hurts.  My RD upped my MTX and put me on predisone, but foot still swelled and hurts.  Actually both feet hurt, but only one is swelled and has been for over 2 months now, I tried to put my shoe on for the first time in a month and could not get it on.  I'm beginning to think its not the RA that is causing this, because if it was shouldn't the cortizone shot, the predisone of taken care of it.  My RD just shrugged off the fact that I had a shot and my OP has never returned my calls, although I have an appointment with him on Thursday.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

Phil

From my own experiences, I believe previously all these drugs work fine for you but over the years your body resists these drugs. You are at stagnant stage whereby the swells still stay and you experience pain when you step on ground. These drugs have stop your earlier pain but unable to clear the toxic in the blood and joints.

I've only been on the MTX for 8 weeks now and the predisone for 2 weeks.  Before that while I was waiting to get into a RD, was on predisone, but only for 3 weeks.  Nothing I've taken has cleared the swelling or pain up in my foot.  Just baffled and my doctors aren't that forthcoming, except to schedule more appointments.

Hi Phil!

Some combinations of drugs can cause swelling in the feet/ankles.  I do not know what all of these combinations could be.

Do I understand this correctly? Both feet hurt, yet, only one foot is swollen?  Why did the orthopedic doc give you a shot?  Did you have an injury in that foot/ankle that may not have cleard up yet?

prednisone can make my feet swell.  After long-term use, it made my feet, ankles and legs swell a great deal.  They had thought maybe a blood clot?  No, no clot!  They also had to rule out heart disease.  No heart disease.  It was a toxic reaction to prednisone.  (I had been taking it for too long at high doses, trying to get my disease under control.)

There can be many different causes of this.  Quite often, it's a medication reaction.  Can you get some relief from putting your feet up?  If this continues, definitely get it checked out!  Make sure the doctor knows what is going on, to be sure he/she thinks it is fine to wait until Thursday.  (The "schedulers" do not know how to do "trriage."  They do not necessarily know how to assign priority to people calling in with different symptoms.)  You may ask to speak to the doctor's nurse, who can get a word in to the doctor for you.

I hope you get some relief soon, as this can be quite painful!

Blessings!

Phil,

I think you should go with Hopeful's suggestion to call and talk to the nurse. When I can't get a call back, I get to the receptionist and I tell them that I haven't gotten and answer in however many days and that I need something done now. Usually, that will get some action. Do not let them put you into their message service. Tell them that you will hold for the doctor or the doctor's nurse.

You've been patient about this as I've been reading your posts for some time. I don't think they have got to the right solution yet. If they can't solve it, then they should send you to a specialist that can. But don't settle for continuing unanswered questions.

I really hope they find a solution for you soon.

I can remember the exact day when it starting hurting.  It was a Saturday and i was at work, was walking around, had just started taking predisone, been on it for about 3 days and I was walking down the floor when my left foot just started to hurt...and it hasn't stopped.  About 2 weeks later I noticed the swelling.  I've propped my feet up, but it seems to hurt more when I do that.  The OP thought the shot would take the swelling down and it did, on one side of my foot, but then it came back.  The pain seems to be mainly on the very top of the foot.  going to call the OP back tomorrow, just so tired of limping around with no concrete answers, is it RA, or something else, just don't know.

Phil

Oh, forgot to add, I read up on Edema, but it said on the site that I read it on that normally there is no pain.  This is constant pain, somedays are not so bad like right now, but I can always feel the pain, whether walking or sitting, other days it is agonizing to walk on.  So don't know if it could be that or not, but hope my OP can tell me.

Hi Phil.  Maybe it's gout...??  My dad had it years ago and his feet swelled up tremendously.  Just a thought...

Susan

Hi Phil

Deanna's right:  If your current medical people don't know what it is, try seeing someone else. As I've mentioned earlier, there are lots of other inflammatory types of arthritis (including gout, Reiter's Syndrome/Reactive Arthritis) that could cause your foot to swell up in this way.  In the meantime, you need to be your own best advocate and make a fuss until you've got a diagnosis - else your foot joints may be suffering permanent damage.

Keep fighting!

I had asked about gout, but they ruled it out (never did any test though for it).  I also asked by the other types of arthritis, my RD said that the blood test should tell him, still waiting for him to get back to me on this.  Got another appointment Thursday with the OP, and I'm not leaving that office until I get some answers, if it didn't hurt so bad it would be funny.

Phil

Hi Phil

I'm glad they ruled out gout at least. Good luck on Thursday - stage a "one man sit-in" if you need to
