Hair loss from MTX?? | Arthritis Information

Just wondering if anyone else taking Methotrexate is experiencing hair loss?  I have been on it for about 8 or 9 months now and in the last few days I have notice "gobs" of hair coming out.  I have a lot of hair, but, if it keeps going at this rate.. that could change.  This hair loss on top of the sores in my mouth and nose are going to be the death of  me..

Any suggestions?

Yes, I have the same problem too. Mention it to your rheumy. I reduced my dose of methetrexate and that has helped some. Also taking folic acid helps. I take 4 per day regardless of whether I'm on mxt that day. My has thinned considerably even with these measures, sepecially in the bang area.

Yes I am taking the folic acid supps as well, but every morning when I wake up there are clumps of hair on my pillow...

And now this morning I wake up with a HUGE sore on my upper lip... looks like a fever blister...

Thank goodness I see the doc on Tuesday!!

Hi Dana - well I was/am losing my hair from plaquenil.  There's a web site that can tell you more about hair loss and the causes.  It's www.heralopecia.com .  There is a shampoo and conditioner called Nioxin (from a professional hair stylist), that may help keep the healthy hair strong and you can go to a dermatologist who would be able to get you a Minoxidil rx.

All I have are suggestions and I'm sorry - some good root volumizer helps it look fuller too....

sorry sweetie, Jody

I've been on MTX for 5 months, and now, I've added Arava, and yes, I'm starting to see some hair come out. Not a lot. Just a little clump each day. I'm not worried - yet. I was losing my hair before taking MTX because I just had a baby and
was breastfeeding... now I am on MTX and the hair loss is
considerably worse! I have to tie my hair back every day otherwise
heaps of it ends up around the house. It's worse when I have to wash
it... great handfuls come out. I have very fine hair, so it's worrying
me that soon I'll have bald patches. So Dana, I can certainly
sympathise with you.
I'll be seeing my rheumy in a week's time, so I'll definitely be
mentioning it to him.
Dana,

I have been on the MTX for 2 yrs now. I started with the MTX pills and now I inject MTX. While on the pills, I had the same problem with hair loss. My Rd put me on 3 mg of Folic acid daily and leucovor calcium once a week. That did help with the hair loss. But it seems now that I inject my MTX, that the hair loss has lessened.  I even noticed that it started to grow back in. Little small fuzzys everywhere! I totally understand what you are talking about! I have very fine hair and lossing any of it is a problem. I see that you are taking folic acid, but it may not be enough.

As far as the mouth sores, You need to call your RD about that. It could be from the MTX.

Hope today is a good day for all!    Huggs!

The folic acid is crucial, but I seen other people mention something else that the doctor has prescribed that has helped in addition to the folic acid. You might do a search on hair loss and mouth sores to see if it comes up.

It seemed to help others.

You need the Lecavorin calcium (my spelling is not correct but close!).  You don't need the expensive hair products--I use Suave products and Pantene products and it is now working out fine.  You might add a hair thickening product to help thicken your hair.  In the time while it is growing back, it helps to have a layered haircut--easier to hide the shiney spots!  I just went through this whole ordeal myself.  It also sounds like you are either getting too strong a dose of Mthx or you cannot tolerate it--with the mouth sores.  Talk to your doctor and if you stay on the Mthx. insist on the Lecavorin.  You take it once a week--I take it the day after the Mthx.  Good luck!

PS:  My hairdesser also suggested Biotin (a B vitamin you can get at Waltmart for or so, drink lots of water and get exercise and eat good, healthy meals.

When my doctor first put me on MTX he said a possible side affect was losing your hair.  I took off my hat and shown him my bald plate and said "ok, next side affect".
