For anyone who has taken Biotin for hair growth, please share your experience.  I need something.  Thanks

Susan

Hi Susan, I tried Biotin and also Biotin shampoo with no obvious results.  But, I only used it for 4-5 months so perhaps that is not long enough.
It will be interesting to see if anyone else has tried it.

Luv, N&T

Susan:  I stated earlier to you, my hairdresser recommended the Biotin to me. He said he didn't know if it really helped but would not hurt to try.  At the same time, the RA dr gave me Lecovorin Calcium to take.  I don't know which or both helped.  I still loose some hair but it has filled in nicely.  I get the Biotin from Walmart--about a bottle.  I take 1 a day.   Remember it is normal to shed some hairs each day but not normal for it to come out in gobs.  Give it a try--can't hurt.

I started taking Biotin long before my RA diagnosis because my hair was falling out prematurely.  It slowed the process.

In addition, Biotin promotes strong nails.  Suddenly, my nails are long and strong something they never were before.

Thanks everyone for your input.  Yes, I remember Catnip shared your experience with me and it gave me hope.  Thought I'd pulse the rest of the gang!

Susan:  I was loosing so much hair, I actually bought 2 wigs.  I have worn neither of them because I hate them!  I guess I hate what they stand for.  When it first started, I talked with the nurse in my RA drs office because she had to teach me how to inject the Humira.  She said she could prescribe the Lecuvorin Calcium for me and that might help.  I waited until I saw the doctor and he prescribed it for me after some discussion.  He didn't think the hair lose was important--well not to him!--but I was totally freaking out with it.  I really could not handle it.  So he agreed and I have 1 pill a week the day after my mthx.  It has no side effects that I know of--I have scoured the leaflet that Medco sends with it.  The Biotin doesn't seem to have any side effects that I can figure out either.  I think I might be in what they call chemical controlled remission altho I still have pain from the damage done to some of my joints.  Right now life is tolerable.  Who knows about tomorrow.  Maybe they will come up with something that cures this stuff.

Susan,

I've been taking Biotin for about 4 years now.  I started once my eyebrows started to fall out or thin...  My hair dresser suggested it from a couple of her Chemo patients.   It's worked wonders for me.   However, remember as with a lot of medications you have to remain loyal with it and take it daily, otherwise you will have no results.

Good luck !!!!

Hi, I'm also suffering hair loss and was curious to know what works
and what doesn't. Thanks for starting this thread.
Can anyone tell me more about lecuvorin calcium.. is it like a
vitamin/mineral supplement and readily available over the counter?
I've only heard of biotin as a supplement for hair loss.Lecuvorin Calcium is a rx.  It is a stronger version of folic acid but I think it works differently.  It is common for people taking mthx. It's purpose is to counteract the bad side-effects of the Mthx.  You have to get a prescription from your RA doctor.  Biotin is a B vitamin.  Good for cardio vascular system, hair and nails.  Biotin can be purchased at a Walmart in the vitamin section 1000mg for about a bottle.  Probably 60 pills in a bottle.  Susan, I have just started taking biotin today (300mcg) so I'm going
to give it a trial run and see how it goes. Cross fingers it works!

Shannon,

My Biotin from GNC (capsules) is 2500mcg and that has worked wonderfully for me.  You may want to either increase this (be sure to clear it with your RD or PCP first though).  Remember also to be sure to take it as part of your daily medications because it's not something that you will see the effects of if you only take it when you remember.

Good LUCK !!!!

Well, I just bought an over the counter bottle from the vitamins/
minerals section of our pharmacy. I mentioned biotin to my GP and
she just shrugged her shoulders as if to say... there's no point trying
because MTX will still make your hair fall out. Plus, she thinks my
hair loss is also due to my pregnancy. So I will try this lower dose
until I go back to see her which is only a few weeks away... then
perhaps she can prescribe a higher amount.

Hi, I am on 9 mtx a week and have lost over half my hair, no exaggeration!! Doc tried Folic Acid, then Leucovorin, he has me up to 9 a week!! NOTHING is working. He said some lose hair with MTX some don't. I refuse to be bald at 45.

Also...MTX not the best for me, but we are self insured, we have NO prescription coverage. Soooooooooo No Biologics for me. Hubby makes too much money for Drug Company help, yet we don't have 1200-1800 amonth for meds.  Driving me nuts!!
