My RD wants me to start on Lexapro, I've read all the very bad side effects ( like you can't get off of it) and more; any imput?

I've been on it for a year and it was a God send for me.  Started feeling better the next day.  I don't know if Lexapro is like Paxil which is a horror to get off of.  I know that I have missed a day in taking my Lexapro and didn't feel any withdrawal symptoms.

Hi H2Osign, I've been on Lexapro for 3 years and I've never felt better. I am a new and different person thanks to this wonder drug.  I was practically a recluse and cried alot before going on it. I didn't enjoy things and was afraid to drive much.  Menopause didn't help either!!   I finally got my life back.  As to side effects, I have had none.  Don't know about going off of it if ever I decide to do it. Just remember the first week on it is weired.  Felt dizzy alot and heaviness on top of head, but this was the drug doing its job.  After my body got used to it...I felt great!!!  Hope this helps you in your decision and hope you feel better soon.

Hi,

I too am currently on Lexapro.  I have been taking it for about 3 months now and it has really helped.  I've missed dosages and never felt bad.  When I first started taking it the RN had me take them at night because of the drowsiness, but once my body got used to it, I started taking it in the morning.  I have already reduced my dosage and the RN will continue to reduce it until I'm off.  I think the key is not to just immediately stop taking the Lexapro, but rather wean your body off of it gradually.

I saw the drowsiness and dizziness as well which is one of the reasons I started my perscription on a weekend rather than during the week and then trying to deal with the first set of side effects while at work.
This may not be an issue for you but my husband sells insurance policies and he says that if you are on an antidepressant it is extremely difficult to get life insurance.

I was on Lexapro for about 8 months and while it helped my depression, the sexual side effects caused me to stop using it. It took around 3 weeks to completely wean myself off of it and it was quite unpleasant. Dizziness, headaches and nausea were so bad I could hardly move from the couch. Of course, it's not the same for everyone. I take Wellbutrin now which doesn't work as well but my sex life is working just fine!!! I was on Lexapro and had to switch because it stopped working. I don't remember having any problems when I went off it. I just had to taper down before starting Cymbalta, but no problems. Good luck!I took it for about 3months. I had to take half in the am and half at night or it made me feel really weird. But the way I was taking it worked for me. I decided I didnt want to take it anymore just because. I think I did a slight taper down over a week or two with no problems.
