Have any of you had ’osteonecrosis’? | Arthritis Information

Hi all

I am having an MRI shortly, as it seems likely that I have osteonecrosis (dead bone) in my right hip and possibly also my right knee: It would certainly explain the pain I've been having!! :)

If it isn't that, it's plain ol' 'secondary osteoarthritis' - either way, a hip replacement is looming larger (I'm 40). Happily, I am finally getting sufficient pain relief (from slow-release morphine capsules), so am coping SOOO much better! I had to progress through all the weaker alternatives (codeine, tramadol/ultram etc, before I've arrived at something that actually works.)

I would love to from from anyone else who has had been diagnosed with 'osteonecrosis'.

Wendy; I've never even heard of that. Good Luck with your MRI. I hope everything will soon be determined and you can work on a long term solution.

Warm Wishes.

Thanks Lovie.

I think it's fairly rare thankfully.

Have a good day!

Wendy, they've tested me for that because of being on the prednisone so long. My hip even felt like it collasped on me. Fortunately, it was only fluid on the hip. That was painful. I had to start using a cane again and do PT. But it has gotten much better except if I've been on it a lot or I'm flaring.

Hopefully, that is all that is wrong with you. If you have it, while not good, I believe the go in and surgically try to hollow the bone which causes new bone growth.

A good source of info is www.emedicine.com and search for bone necrosis.

I really hope you don't have it. But they have to check it out as a possibility. It is rare.

I don't have osteonecrosis but I was having funny things happening to me around my ear, jaw and gums.  So my doctor took me off Fosamax, in case it could be osteonecrosis, although he didn't think I had it but didn't want to take any chances.  I hope that your MRI comes back negative for osteonecrosis.

Good Luck
