that you don't get RA in the joints of your fingers closest to your fingernails but I have definate tenderness there - does anyone else have this? That sounds like osteo arth, rather than RA.   I started with the joints in my fingers closest to the nails about 15 years ago.  It has really enlarged all those joints.  The pain isn't as bad as it was and the dr. told me that with OA the pain will subside, but the joints are very ugly. Oh I have RA alright - anti ccp RF dx'd a year ago but it's just this new joint thing - I didn't think you could get it there either but it's quite sore now.

Sounds like you have RA and OA.

You can have both RA and OA and the arthritis in the first joint closest to the finger nail is OA.  It forms nodules that stick out and are painful. That is exactley where my RA started. I woke up with painful, red, swollen bumps on my finger and thumb on the joint closest to my nails. I had blood test and xrays that confirmed I have RA. MY doc said usually RA doesn't strike there but it is possible. Hmmm that is weird.....I have some tenderness there too...and I dont think I have OA too...but it all hurts!
