KEE REPLACEMENT QUESTION | Arthritis Information

I am scheduled to have a total knee replacement in October.  Do any of you that have had this kind of surgery recommend that I get a lift chair to help afterwards?  I do not have one now and am not sure if the recliners that we already have will be sufficient, although they are the kind of recliners that you operate with a 'lever' on the side and do not have to use your feet to push down to change positions.  Any thoughts ?

No you may not need it.  My mother had the knee replacement not too long ago and she is getting up and down the steps no problem!!!  Her right knee was so bad the dr was suprised that it lasted as long as it did.  She has recovered so well from the surgery and she is so happy with her progress that she is having the other knee done in about 6 months.  meme

Thanks, Meme, that is encouraging news about your mothers recovery !! I will be off of all RA meds for quite a while and was worried about that causing more difficulty getting up and down.

You may not need it, but if you ever have trouble getting out of a lower chair (as recliner chairs often are) they are very nice. Buy one for comfort since they all rise.

No you shouldn't need anything special.  They will have you getting up and down from chairs and bed and toilet before you leave hospital.  You will be getting around on your own in no time.  I had my knees done, one 6 years ago and the other 5 years ago.  I was pretty much up and about within a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone, you have all saved me a lot of money !! yeah !!

As some of you know, I go for my total knee replacement in 10 days. The only things that I had to do was install grab bars in the shower, get a shower chair, and buy a raised toliet seat with handles. Still have to get a small foot stool to rest the leg on. Just make sure that your chair has good support, arms, and seat is 12 to 18 inches from the floor.
Hope that this helps, ouchy.

Thanks Marisa,

I would love to hear about your experience when you are able to get to a computer after your surgery. My surgery is scheduled in October.

Good luck to you !

Hi All,

I had both my knees replaced in 2000.  I purchased the automatic recliner/lifter because I knew I would be having both knees done within that year.

I felt the purchase was worth it. I use it all the time.

The surgery was a little tough and rehab about 6weeks.  You start to feel better around month three. Be sure and save your pain pills for the rehab.  I affectionally called my PT "Physical Terrorist".  They are tough cookies.

Monday afternoon

Hi Everyone,

I have osteo-arthritis in my right knee and am currently going throught the five shot series of Hyaluronic Acid Therapy, in hopes that it will replace the worn cartiledge in my knee.  If this doesn't work, I plan to have knee replacement.  Has anyone had an experience with these shots and how did you do?

Thanks, Donna G

To Donna

Is the stuff to be injected also called Supartz? If so I had it done in Nov 2004. It did help me, but not enough to go to the trouble of taking off work 5 times in 5 weeks. But I have RA was well as OA, cortisone works far better for me.

Good Luck - some people really respond very well. The results usually last 6 months but sometimes it can last a year. I don't think it will grow new cartiledge for you, but lubricates the joint so the cartiledge you have left works better.
