Interested to know how many of you got RA for the first time after pregnancy.  I got my first bout of wrist pain at three 20 four months pregnant - just when the hormones are changing then it disappeared only to return three days after I stopped breastfeeding when my baby was 9 months old.  I know this is quite common but I was just wondering if it had happened to anyone else here Hi Flint! You and I are few and far between cases! I first had
symptoms when I was only nine weeks pregnant, then wasn't
diagnosed until about three or four months pregnant... but that
stage it was throughout my whole body and I was in agony. I truly
believe the change in hormones set off my RA, although in most
cases women go into remission when pregnant. I breastfed my
daughter till she was four months then sadly had to give it up and go
on MTX because the prednisone was making me nuts and the pain
was coming back.

i was diagnosed 6 months after the birth of my daughter.  the drs first thought it was carpal tunel but after the blood work came back it was very clear that it was RA ..

My symptoms started after child birth to, but remained mild for 6 years and then went crazy!I had my first RA symptoms in the first trimester of my 5th pregnancy.  Then they went away in the 2nd/3rd, only to return with a vengance at about 4 weeks postpartum.  With the 6th pregnancy, the pain was bad in the first trimester, but again the 2nd and 3rd were wonderful!  And boom... 4/5 weeks after.  But wow, what a nice few months in the  middle.  I've even considered being a surrogate for my BIL/BIL just to get a few months off of pain. LOL! I had palindromic arthritis before getting pregnant. Was pain free during pregnancy and then the pain hit me like a ton of bricks almost exactly 6 weeks after giving birth. Now have full blown RA.

6xmum may have something there with the surrogacy idea...Does being on the Pill, which mimics pregnancy, help any of you ladies? My story is similar to Shannon's.
I started having symptoms in the 4th month of my very first pregnancy.
Continued to have pains for the rest of my pregnancy, although the RD
initailly ruled out RA b/c of the whole "remission thing".   First 4-5 weeks
after giving birth were great and then BOOM it hit, full blown RA. It was
AWFUL!!

I had to go on Voltaren and Prednisone so I could keep breast feeding but
then at 6 mnths i had to stop breast feeding so i could go on Enbrel b/c i
was already developing damage to my joints. I'm also on Methotrexate
now to help slow the progression of damage.

I NEVER had any signs of RA previous to my pregnancy so I am absolutely
convinced it was the hormones that set it off.

Oh well...i have a beautiful 5 1/2 year old daughter to focus on now and
just pray my damage doesn't get worse!!
