PMR and other health conditions | Arthritis Information

I have been wondering if anyone else has noticed that since they were dx'd with PMR that other health problems seem to pile up too? I was dx'd in June 2006 and since then I have started having problems with my teeth.  Two teeth have broken for no apparent reason.  I wasn't eating anything hard or anything like that.  They just broke.

Yesterday I went to have bloodwork to check my sed rate and my doc looked at my eyes and then he told me I needed to see an eye doc because it looked to him like I have an infection in both eyes.

Have any of you experienced these kinds of things as being connected to PMR?

I sure would like to hear what anyone of you have to say about connected health problems.

I hope you all have a very good day,

Hi Mariellen,

I have not had teeth problems, but my eyes seem to be very dry and sensitive....not sure if it is allergies or side effect of prednisone.  Do your eyes bother you or just look infected?

Janet

Prednisone is an immune-suppressant (given to organ transplant patients, for example, to prevent rejection) so that might explain why an infection in the eyes wouldn't clear up as quickly as it might normally do.  Also, it depletes the body's calcium (as well as chromium, potassium and ?) and puts us more at risk for osteoporosis.  I don't know if it would work so quickly that your teeth would break, but perhaps you should have your bone density checked and ask your doctor about going on Fosamax or whatever supplements they use to increase bone density.  Are you taking extra calcium?

Dear Janet and Ruth,

Thanks for your replies.  I went to the eye doctor and he dx'd my eye as having 2 or more blood vessels ruptured.  He said the rupture was the worse he has ever seen.  My eye was filled with blood and the puppil was enlarged.  I went back to see the eye doctor 12 days later and by then most of the blood had drained out.  But there are still some red lines in my eye.  He said the rupture probably relieved a lot of presure and that was good.  The doc said it could be connected with the PMR but he did not think it was connected with the Prednisone.

Thank so much for your support.  I am still learning about PMR and finding out there is a lot I don't know.

Have a good day and thanks again.

Mariellen

Hi, I haven't had any tooth breakage, but my teeth became incredibly sensitive for a long time, then one day just left.  Also, two teeth under my bridge became loose for no reason...still are.  It all has something to do with the prednisone, I think. Just another one of the little surprises courtesy prednisone.  Glad your eye is ok.
