a stupid question | Arthritis Information

Hi there

When I form a fist, my middle knuckle is a big as a house! And totally weird looking, is this deformity, and apart from surgery, is there anyway to make it go back to normal ? I really don't love it, and I just want a realistic answer.. My RD said laser will work, but I think they are just trying to make money.. This is not swelling now..

Thanks everyone :)

No question is a stupid question tam!  Sorry I cant answer but someone more experienced can help you I am sure.

Wendy

Hi Tam,

I don't have an answer for you. Mine does the same thing and I find myself hiding my hands when I'm out in public and even around my husband. I know I have to get over this but I'm so sad. My hands have never been beautiful, but now they look so narly and bony. I wish gloves were still in style. I'm not excepting these changes to my body very well

I know I hate it too. Such a dramatic change practically overnight, is hard to deal with, my boyf says I look normal - but I know these are not the youthful hands I had 2 months ago :( My partner has been preparing to propose and I am paranoid that I will have to flaunt my ring around on these arthritic hands! Its something that I am trying hard to work on mentally - but still wopndering if things can help...

If you get a big enough diamond.....no one will be looking at your fingers; they'll be destracted by the ring!! lol

Mine is like that too....but if you aren't in a lot of pain from it; I wouldn't try to do anything about it at this point. Surgery may be in your future.....but I wouldn't start it just for cosmetic purposes. Over time you'll learn to put all of that into prespective.

Hang in there.

Thanks, I'm so frustrated by it all, esp as they can't tell me what type of arthritis it is. They say there is no swelling (?) so it can't be RA. Then what on earth is doing this to me.. I feel that I know better tho.. Plus I responded to the tetracyline and salazoprin over a month or 2, so my blood tests came back normal. Off they sent me on my merry way, saying stop stressing because they can not "label" my condition. I'd like to see if they would stress over it!! I am so over the medical system!

I'm with Lovie. Get a giant diamond...LoL

You say it's just one knuckle?? That seems so weird. I'd keep being a pest until you see someone that can help you. I would NEVER settle for someone saying "we don't know what its called" My response would be "Then send me to someone who CAN tell me what it's called." BE STRONG! :)

Make a fist and look at it.

Isn't everyones middle knuckle a lot bigger than the other ones? I'll admit mine are bigger than the average person.....but the center one is bigger anyway isn't it?

Eh, not by much. Course, mine are all wacky. So I dunno. Haha

I have no doubt it will be a biggen! :) Well it is the middle one that is the biggest, the last two look like they are joining, and the first ones are bigger as well, I spose the middle ones have an extra bone or something happening. Fun! Only the first knuckles tho. Yeah, the middle has always been more prominent, being fairly thin.

They are right tho, there has never been any apparent swelling - maybe the enlargement of the joints IS the swelling.. ?

I have been pestering, they told me to stop looking for answers and suggested I have a mental issue! HA HA! What are these people on!?  I hope you all have better Doctors!

Hah, there's nothing wrong with not being satisfied with no answer! You should be allowed to get an answer! I'd see someone else if I were you. Does it hurt when you make a fist? Or when you straighten it out?No it doesn't. Weird hey! It aches/hurts at various times, sometimes more than others. Goes reddish sometimes, occ I have elbow ankle and knee pain, that lasts a few minutes.  Hurts more as the day goes on, rather than in the mornings. Sound familiar? or not so much.. Or could be that the meds are working.. I am waiting for a second opinion, but thats not till Nov 20th! You'd hate to be in a rush!

It gets reddish?? The skin? Have they def ruled out an infection? It could be a bone infection. Or a tendon infection. Or a lot of other kinds of infection. Redness with swelling is usually a sign of that, but it doesn't have to be. However, I would think at this point, you'd have a lot more pain with it.

Or not! I just remembered. A girl I worked with was sick ALL the time, and her ankle kept going red, and she would get sores on it. Eventually they found out she had some sort of soft tissue immune disorder, and she had an infection burried deep in the tissues of her ankle. It'd been there for MONTHS. I can't remember the name of her disease, but it's very rare, and very hard to find. Just a thought! You might want to google that a bit more though. Heh.

Good luck in Nov either way!

Yep the skin, i thought that is what RA did ? Is it poss to have redness without swelling? No wonder they think i'm CrAzY ! he he.. Thanks heaps for your time with me xoI think RA can do it, but I know like, if you WebMD pain and swelling and the skin is red, it'll tell you there's a possability of infection. And I'm pretty sure my mom was always told to look out for redness. Hmm I can't recal...

Hi Tam,

Yes RA can definately make the area red and tender.  The middle nuckle is the one I am having trouble with at the moment.  It swells and gets very tender.  I have a brace I have to wear right now to keep from further injury.  If it is hard though instead of swollen it is probably from RA damage to the joint.  Have they x-rayed your hand.  That's what I had to have done.  As it turned out the joint was deteriorating in that joint.  Definately don't quit asking questions.  We are entitled to answers. Right girls!!!!!!!!!!!

Be Blessed

Thats what I do not understand.. They said there was no joint damage from the bone scan.. Also does a flare indicate pain a feeling of dead hands, in the evening and then fine in the morning? Thats what happened last night. I am sorry, I know I am asking so many basic questions and everyone is different !Hi Tam74 and all, I do have that on my middle finger to it looks like crap but I just deal with it. i have it on both hands in fact I have it on 7 of my fingers. I work in a Nursing home and everybody is used to seeing my fingers they never say anything when I first got the swollens fingers and nobes on them the staff said what is wrong and I told them oh it's just athro. I could nor admit to myseld anything else could be wrong but there is I have RA and I do have a lot of pain in fingers wrist knees, and big time feet. Today was a tebble day for me I had a hard time driving my car to work but I will not let this stop me from doing my job and that is taking care of people. Yes I could of

That's the ticket! A HUGE diamond

I'm going to tell my hubby, "since I have RA you have to buy me a new ring"
