Yet Another Sleepless Night | Arthritis Information

I have been laying in bed trying to go to sleep since 2am and it is now almost 5am. It seems I do this every night, even if I do go to bed early, I still wake up to go to the bathroom and then have a hard time falling back to sleep. I am not sure if it has to do with taking my pred before bedtime, but I have to take the pred before going to bed as it helps me to not be so stiff in the morning and helps me to make it thru my day a little more less stiff and swelled.

I lay here thinking of all kinds of stuff. And the sometimes, when I take a Lortab10 I start to think crazy stuff. Like one time I thought someone I talked to on the internet was actually a psycho killer, I do not know why I kept thinking that, but I convinced myself that the person was. But once the Lortab10 ran it's course I no longer thought that about that person.

Here is a few notes - running low on TP, still hungry, yawning but cannot fall asleep, need a coke, and finally I love my new jersey sheets... sooo soft and comfy! OH and hubby is HOGGING the bed once again!!

Last week I had started taking Simply Sleep, which is just Benedryl under a different name and targeted for a sleep aid. And I was taking them as early as 8pm and hoping I would fall asleep before midnight and nothing! Did not even feel sleepy, but once I did fall asleep, FINALLY, I did not want to wake up, so I gave up on taking them.

I also have another problem... when I do fall asleep I do not want to wake up. I could sleep all day and just get up to go to the restroom and not really ipen my eyes good enough to wake myself up, kinda like a sleepwalk. And then I can fall right back to sleep. It is weird,

I have always been like that able to sleep my days away if people would just leave me alone or if I did not have my son to tend to.

Oh weekends I can sleep all day until 5pm and still feel like I have not had enough sleep. I am always so tired and feel drained of energy. I can also stay up more than 24hrs with less than 3 hrs sleep and still not be able to fall asleep. I done that a couple of days ago.

I just have messed up sleeping habits and need to get them straighted out. Is there such a thing as a sleep doctor? IF so, what are they called and where can I find one... LOL

joonie, maybe you should try takin the pred in the mornin.  but who knows.  i talked to my RD about how i cant sleep much and he says it has to do with the pred.  OMG i had to giggle when you mentioned the lortab incident about thinkin randy was a psycho killer.  lol  hope you get some kind of sleep

This problem must be part of the disease because I have many, many sleepless nights.  When I go to bed I feel exhausted and then I lay there for two hours trying to get to sleep.  And then after I do get to sleep and then get up for a pee run, it's another two hours before I get back to sleep.  I do not know how all of you mothers and working people manage this problem.  How do you do it?

YAWN~~~~
Luv, now&then I sure could not take my pred. before bedtime.  Definitely keeps me awake.  I have also noticed painkillers can keep me awake except for Soma - muscle relaxer.  It helps.  I don't remember a night I have not woke up and had to try to go back to sleep.  Comes with the territory.  Unisom Unisom!!!!! LoL I'm telling you, try it! It works great for me. Just make sure you can get 8 hours. :)

Shannon - I was told to take my pred in the morning, but I did and for a week and every morning I woke up even more stiff and swelled then when I went to sleep. The pred does not last 24hrs like my regular Dr told it did, it only lasts about 12-15hrs before I start to get stiff and swell and have increased pain. I have to be able to function when son wakes up. And if I am laying in bed unable to move or anything I cannot tend to him. So, I have to take it at night when I am fixing to go to sleep that way my stiffness, pain, and swelling is minimal.

I usually only get about 3-6 hrs of sleep, so I am guessing unisom is out of the question. I usually only get my 8+ hrs of sleep on the weekends when hubby is off work and holidays when hubby is off work.

I had even tried to wake up after going to sleep for a few hours before taking my pred and hoping I would wake up before the last pred started to wear off. It kinda worked but it is iffy if I wake up on time to get the pred on time. Like I said I have to be able to move about when son wakes up. Otherwise I am crap out of luck and grouchy because I had to push myself and I usually hurt myself more when I am stiff, in pain, and swelled. And there is no slowing down when you have a 2 year old who does not even know how to still for 2 mins and is into everything!!!!

The only thing that worked for me was Benydryl. You can get it without a prescription at any drugstore. The Pharmacist checked to see if it would interfere with any other drugs I am taking.
I tried it with 50mg the first night and it was too much. I was still groggy in the morning. The 25mg was perfect. I take my pred in the morning. afterwards I told the doctor and he said it was fine.
I was going nuts with out any sleep. I thought I couldnt stand another night of staring into space.
I hope you find something that works for you because you really really need your sleep.

Simply Sleep is the same as benedryl just in another box under another name to target it for a sleep aid. I compared it to the box of benedryl hubby has for his sinuses and they were the exact same.

It did not help me, I still stayed awake, but when I did fall asleep I did not want to wake up for nothing!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I am in pain when I wake up.  Pred and darvocett work for me within an hour of taking it.  I could never take it at night.jonnie, Yes predisone can keep you awake,I had that problem for 3 years. I took 80 Mg for 3 years. and I had allot of sleepiness nights. Try in early morning and see if that helps you Shannon - I was told to take my pred in the

JOONIE! I am EXACTLY the same... and I have a seven month old
daughter. Prednisone doesn't work for me if I take it in the
morning... it takes way too long to kick in. It also doesn't last 24
hours. I take it at about 8.30pm and it will last until about 4pm the
next day. However I haven't found any effects on my sleep and I think
it might be partly due to the fact I am so exhausted all the time! I
have to get up at least twice a night for my baby, so I think lack of
sleep causes my body to shut down quite easily to get much-needed
rest even when I have just taken pred. In saying this, I only have 5mg
per day... this week I'm down to 4mg per day. So it's not very much
compared to other people. How much are you taking? Perhaps you
could split the dose - half at night and half in the morning?

It would be just wonderful to be able to sleep at night! It is so weird. I'm so terribly tired but I just stare at the ceiling. This happens several times a week. Sometimes I get 3-4 hrs. sleep. On other nights, it takes me about an hour to fall asleep. In the mornings, I just want to stay in bed, but I can't, darn it!  I think I will check into the Benedryl. I yawn all day long. For a disease that takes all the life out of you, it sure won't let you get to sleep when you so badly need it.

Ahhh! I cannot stress enough how much you guys do NOT need to be taking benedrly and tylenol PM or any other sleep aid thats not JUST a sleep aid.

With having all the medications in your systems that you already do, the last thing you really need is to be gunking it up with antihistamines and tylenol and other stuff. Yeah, they probably don't interact with your meds, but there are so many good sleep aids out there, that have no additives. If one doesn't work for you, try another.

As far as I've been told, most OTC sleep aids are non-habit forming, and will not leave you groggy in the morning. Just make sure that you can devote at least 7 hours to sleep. Unisom is the one I use, and I can use it for weeks, and then be fine and not need it for months.

I'd just hate to see something happen to any of you from just having too many meds and too much going on in your bodies.

Once again, I cannot emphasise enough how important it is that you take only a sleep aid, if all you need is to sleep. I hope someone listens to my advice..

Hi, Katie, Thanks for the advice. I was going to ask my Dr. before I took the Benedryl. I'm one that is afraid to take anything before I ask my Dr. I know that the results might just be terrible. I'm one that has reactions to medications. I will check with him about Unisom.

Take care

Trisha

Talk to your RD about sleeplessness.  He/She may recommend a prescription sleep aid.  There are several that have very little possibility of dependence or side effects.

I hate insomnia!
Trisha, I'm sure the benedryl won't affect your meds, but its just one of those things. If you had just a sore throat, would you take a medicine that covered sore throat, cough, congestion, fever, and a rash!?! Or would you just take some throat lossingis(sp?!!) I dunno, just makes sense to me!
