Does anyone know if you can contact ss to check on the status of your claim or if that just puts your folder to the bottom of the file?  I was just notified that my cobra will run out in Dec. if I don't have a paper from ss declaring that I'm disabled.

I don't know anything about the process to be honest; but I know in every other aspect of life it never hurts to put in a call just to bring your name to the forefront of someone's mind.

If you by chance end up talking to the right person and that person bumps your file up higher in the stack....all the better.

Following up on an important issue never hurts.

Good Luck Sweetie.

It doesn't hurt anything to give your local office a call and ask about the status of your claim. However, if it is still pending they won't be able to give you an answer, no matter why you need to know. But it won't delay your decision, just to call. They just check your case on the computer.

But explain to them about the COBRA situation and they may be able to advise you what to tell them. Can you maybe call or write whoever notified you that it will run out and let them know you do not have a decision from Soc. Sec. Disability yet?

By the way, you can always call the 800 # for Soc Sec. Dis., as it is easier to reach sometimes, but I have heard they don't always have answers for anything but the most simple questions. I always call my local office if I need help.

Best of luck to you!

Yes, call you local office. They should have given you a claim number that you can use to check on your case online. But since you Cobra is about to run out, you should call them.

The other alternatives are applying for your state medical aid or Long Term Care. In AZ, I guess they have a program that covers medical under LTC. You don't have to leave your home and they provide other services as well.

I would check on all things. Cobra is expensive and I can't afford to stay on it while I wait for disability. I am going to have to use one of these other resources.
