Hiya

Just wondered if anyone knows the long term effects of taking sulphasalazine?

I have been taking it since June with pretty good results - less pain.

Side effects  - headaches, sore throat/throat infection, feeling sick, ringing in my ears, noisy/sore stomach, funny coloured wee!!

I accept that the above are to be expected, but what about long term?

Any info gratefully received

Gilly

I've only been on the sulfasalizine a little more than a month.  But my dosage just got upped...and uck.....my tummy's in a bad way.  I don't think it does anything to you long term.  I've got the ringing in my ears too...and the wee-wee gets better with drinking ALOT of water.  On the arthritis.org site - there's an area for drug info and it states to drink alot of water with the drug so it doesn't form crystals in the urinary tract.

It has it's possible side effects but they are mild considering some of the other drugs.

I was on sulfasalizine for 2 years. i only got an upset stomach. That's it, well, other than the fact that they are so big, but i got over that too, and swallowed 2 and a half at a time. For the achiness you might want to ask your doctor about a pain medication, like tramadol. I LOVE tramadol! I was first given sulphasalazine by my gastro doctor.  This, combined with protonix gave me relief from reflux.  Since diagnosed with RA about 2 1/2 years ago, I am still on sulphasalazine .. 2 in am and 2 in pm.  I haven't had any problems with the stomach since.  The fatigue and achiness seem to be a big part of RA... can't quite get a control on the fatigue... some days worse than others..  Today is an OK day for me.  No nap yet....
