Colonoscopy Question Regarding Meds. | Arthritis Information

I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy the second week in Oct. Should I stop taking my MTX & prednisone? My Dr. didn't mention it & I forgot to ask him. I was upset when he said that I should have one. YIKES!!!!

I'd start with your RD on this.  When I recently had surgery my surgeon deferred to my RD about the meds. (My guess is he won't hold them)

I am probably going to have one this year too since I am now the big 50 and I had an aunt who found cancer with one she had (found at age 65, she is now 80).

I'd be interested in how your RD will handle it.  And thanks, now I will remember to ask my doctor about same.

I just had a colonoscopy this spring while on 17.5 mg per week of MTX.  My doctor said it was no problem so I didn't stop the MTX and had no problems.  By the way...the colonoscopy was no big deal...dozed through the whole thing!  You should ask your doctor though as it might depend on how well your body is dealing with the MTX...I asked before the procedure.  I don't have any experience with prednisone.

Hi I would also ask Your RD about the meds. I just want to say that I had one of these done a few months ago because of a problem and the worst part is the day before. You have to drink this powdered liquid that cleans out You system. Start drinking it as early as passable because You will want to get t sleep that night.

The proceeder itself was not bad at all. They give You something to relax You and I could not feel to much at all and it only takes about 30 Min's, I was fine when it was done.

 Good luck Kat

I had a friend that just had one done and she was really nervous because she'd heard it was horrible. Turned out not to be bad at all she said.

Good Luck with yours. Hope it goes well.

No good advise about the meds. Sorry.

You don't have to go off your meds.  I had one done as an outpatient at the hospital, I was asleep during it.  Make sure there is someone to take you home, you may still be out of it afterwards.  If given as choice of where to have it, have it at the hospital it is alot nicer then in the office.  meme

I had a colonoscopy this year and it was no big deal. The prep before is a pain as you have to clean out your whole system and will spend a lot of time on the john. I think I continued with my meds the day before the proceedure, had my colonoscopy very early, and then took my day's meds afterwards. I may have taken the prednisone that morning before the proceedure. Check with your MD.I had one this year too. The worse part was taking the pills with all the liquid and 'cleaning out' for hours before. I didn't have to drink that powered stuff, just pills taken with clear liquid like Trishiasea said. There was nothing to the procedure. In the hospital hooked up to an I.V. I went to sleep and woke up remembering nothing. That part was great. I think I lost 3 or 4 lbs.!!
