I have been on doxycycline for 6 months for RA.  My teeth are turning brown!  Has anyone else had this side-effect from doxycycline?????Isn't doxycycline an antibiotic?  I was prescribed that before, but I thought it was for an infection and only used for a week or so.  ?

Vickilee,

Antibiotic therapy is used for RA also.  To read about it you can check out www.roadback.org

Some believe arthritis is a bacteria thus antibiotic therapy.  Long term.   I've been doing it for 6 months now.  Only difference so far is no more swelling but I am still have alot pain in my feet especially.

I remember asking my rheumatologist about the antibiotic therapy and she mentioned something about possibly having your skin turning dark from the antibiotics.  I didn't like the sound of that so I never did try that.

I did find a websight that may be of interest to you.

Hi LynnAnn,
I have been on minocycline for my RA and it tends to stain a little
bit.  I have to make sure to floss every day and I started going to the dentist 3 times a year for cleaning. I tend to get the staining on the bottom teeth, inside by the gum line.  I tried to go off minocycline once and I was in major pain, I'm also on methotrexate.  I noticed I also seem darker, like I have a nice tan, that is kind of nice!!  I also have used the crest white strips and they help also!

I was on Doxycycline for about 6 months because of an eye problem (Recurrent Corneal Erosion caused by dry eyes) and noticed a little tooth color change but I don't know if it was related to this med. The Doxycycline has an anti-collagenase property which will help the eye heal after a tear in the cornea. My Eye Dr. prescribed it but the RD approved when I checked the meds with her.

It takes more time but I always check the meds that another Dr gives me with my RD and PCP (although I did have to change PCP last year to find one that would work with me).
